Jackie Collins immediately rose to prominence upon the publication of her debut novel “The World is Full of Married Men,” which was inspired by her personal experiences as a young girl in the 1950s, with married men pursuing her. In writing the book, she had hoped to “turn the double standard on its head.”

Despite criticism about the book being too explicit, it was a best-seller in the US and UK. This was followed by more successful releases such as “The Stud,” “Sinners,” “The Bitch”, “Rock Star,” the extremely popular Hollywood series, Santangelo series, and Madison Castelli series.

As a former actress, she appeared in a string of British B-movies such as “The Safecracker,” “Barnacle Bill,” and “Undercover Girl,” as well as in the TV series “Danger Man” and “The Saint.”

She had written a total of 32 novels, which were all included in the New York Times’s Best-Selling list and were also made into various films and television mini-series. Jackie Collins served as an executive producer or co-producer of the adaptations of her work.

Jackie Collins hosted “Jackie Collins Hollywood” and “Jackie Collins Presents” as well.

She was the younger sister of “Dynasty” star Joan Collins.

Who Is Jackie Collins?

Jacqueline Jill Collins, nicknamed Jackie, was born to Jewish theatrical agent Joseph William Collins and Elsa Collins. Her elder sister, Joan Collins, is a famous actress and author, while her younger brother Bill is a property agent.

Young Jackie went to the all-girls school Francis Holland School but got expelled when she was 15 years old for smoking and absenteeism. She would later refer to herself as a “juvenile delinquent” and a “school drop-out.”

Acting Career

After dropping out of school, 16-year-old Jackie Collins was sent to live with her sister Joan, who was by that time already a well-known film actress. She was instantly enthralled by the glittering world of Hollywood and kept a notebook packed with stories from Hollywood nightlife, and those will later become a big inspiration for her novels.

Around this period, she decided to follow in her sister’s footsteps and auditioned for various movie roles. She then acted in a number of British B-movies, including “Undercover Girl,” “Rock You Sinners,” “The Safecracker,” “Barnacle Bill,” “The Missing Scientists” and “Intent to Kill,” and the television shows “The Saint” and “Danger Man.” She returned to England when her acting career failed to take off and turned to writing.

Writing career

Even though Jackie Collins has already written a lot of works of fiction, writing remained a personal hobby for her until her second husband, Oscar Lerman, came across an unfinished manuscript written by his wife and encouraged her to finish it, telling her, “You’re a storyteller.”

This resulted in her first novel, “The World is Full of Married Men,” published in 1968. Although the book was controversial and was even banned in some countries, it immediately became a best-seller within a week of its release and would later have a film adaptation.

She followed it with the two more best-sellers, her second novel “The Stud” (1969) and “Sunday Simmons & Charlie Brick” (1971), her first organized crime genre novel, “Lovehead” (1974), which is better known now as “The Love Killers,” “The World is Full of Divorced Women” (1975), and “Lovers & Gamblers” (1977).

Jackie also tried her hand at screenwriting. The screenplay for the film adaptation of her novel “The Stud” was co-written by her, and she penned the screenplay for another film adaptation of her work, the 1980 film “The World is Full of Married Men.”

In 1979, she published “The Bitch”, which was the sequel for “The Stud.” Like its predecessor, the book was adapted into a film, which saw her sister Joan Collins, her film career revitalized by the first movie, reprising her role as Fontaine Khaled. Both films were successful at the box office.

Jackie Collins continued to write romance novels after relocating to Los Angeles with her family in the early 80s. There, she finished her follow-up, “Chances,” the first novel in her Santangelo novel series. Lucky Santangelo, one of her most famous characters, was first presented in this book.

Her next novel was released in 1983. Titled “Hollywood Wives”, she wrote it with the knowledge and experience she gained while residing in Sunset Boulevard hills. Marketed as a “scandal exposé,” the book became her most commercially successful novel to date, topping the New York Times’ Best-selling list, her first novel to do so, and has sold over 15 million copies. It was also adapted into a television mini-series in 1985.

The immense success of “Hollywood Wives” catapulted Jackie to a level of stardom that was previously only enjoyed by her actress sister. The novel would later spawn a series of follow-ups that make up the Hollywood series: “Hollywood Husbands” (1986), “Hollywood Kids” (1994), “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” (2001), and “Hollywood Divorces” (2003).

“Lucky,” the sequel to “Chances,” was published in 1985 and was followed by “Rock Star” in 1988.

The start of the 90s saw the romantic novelist release the third novel in the Santangelo series, “Lady Boss,” as well as writing and co-producing “Lucky Chances,” the mini-series combined adaptation of her novels “Chances” and “Lucky,” starring the then-rising actress Sandra Bullock and Nicollette Sheridan.

As she headed into the next decade, she continued her winning streak with the successful releases of novels “American Star,” “Vendetta: Lucky’s Revenge,” “Thrill,” and “Dangerous Kiss.”

The aughts gave Jackie Collins an even more successful period. Among her published works around this time includes “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” (2001) and “Hollywood Divorces” (2003) from the Hollywood series, “Drop Dead Beautiful” (2007) and “Poor Little Bitch” (2009) from the Santangelo series, “Lethal Seduction” (2000) and “Deadly Embrace” (2002) from the Madison Castelli series, and the standalone “Lovers & Players” (2006) and “Married Lovers” (2008). The eight books were all best-sellers, making 2000s Jackie Collins’s most successful period.

As a producer, she executive-produced the television movie adaptation of “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” in 2003. The following year, she also dabbled in hosting with “Jackie Collins Presents” for E! Channel.

In the 2010s, Jackie Collins wrote the last three books in the Santangelo series, “Goddess of Vengeance” (2011), “Confessions of a Wild Child” (2013), and “The Santangelos” (2015), which was her last novel. She also released the books “The Power Trip” (2012) and her own cookbook, “The Lucky Santangelo Cookbook” (2014).

Sadly…

Jackie Collins died of stage-4 breast cancer in 2015. The diagnosis was something she chose to hide from everyone else apart from her sister Joan, afraid that she might become a “burden” to her loved ones. She passed away in her home in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 77.

Two years before her death, she was honored with the Order of the British Empire on the Queen’s Birthday.
