The American writer was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 23, 1942. But he grew up in Long Island and Roslyn, New York.

His father, John Henderson Crichton, was a journalist and his mother, Zula Miller Crichton, was a homemaker.

He began writing at 14.

He wrote an article about his trip to Sunset Crater and it was published in The New York Times.

Crichton studied literature in college but was discouraged by a professor who intentionally gave him bad grades. So he switched majors and graduated with a biological anthropology degree.

He was summa cum laude, by the way!

He then went to Harvard Medical School – and hated it.

In order to pay for groceries…

… Crichton wrote novels under pseudonyms and critiqued books online. His most successful one was ‘Odds On’ under the name John Lange.

After graduating from med school, the now bestselling author started writing novels full-time. He never applied for a medical license.

In 1969…

This now prolific writer published his first novel under his real name, The Andromeda Strain.’ And instantly, it was a hit. Film rights were sold and the film adaptation was released in 1971.

Crichton’s novels published later received the same critical acclaim. Let’s keep in mind that aside from medical and science fiction, he dabbled with other genres too.

For example – ‘The Great Train Robbery.’ It was his bestselling historical novel. But his greatest hits were ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Conga,’ and ‘The Lost World.’

Aside from film adaptations of his books, the national bestseller author created other movies as well.

The TV series ‘ER’ which ran from 1994-2009 was a commercial success. He was also the writer and director of ‘Coma,’ ‘Looker,’ and Runaway.’

Crichton’s post-mortem published books got to The New York Times bestsellers list.

He died of complications from his illness – lymphoma. He was undergoing chemotherapy and had a big chance of recovery. Still, Crichton died on November 4, 2008.

He was mourned by his fifth wife who was then pregnant with his son.
