He gave himself the name “Dreamcatcher.”

He attended Dunedin High School and got his first DJ gigs around this time. Next, he went to study at the University of Miami. He later dropped out of the university to enroll in a 10-week broadcasting class.

After working at a small radio station in Sarasota, Florida, David was offered a job by a program director from the radio station Q105 in Tampa. At the age of eighteen, he was already a ratings success. He also became the go-to person for any task that no one wanted to do, prompting the program director to say, “Get the kid to do it,” hence the nickname “The Kid,” which Kidd Kraddick used as his name while on-air, until his death.

Later, he worked in the radio stations KYNO-FM in Fresno, California, KAYK & KLRZ in Salt Lake City, and KHTZ in Los Angeles, where he also worked as an emcee in comedy clubs.`

Despite his hard work, Kidd Kraddick still remained unsuccessful to the point that he even considered giving up on his dream.

Fortunately…

In 1984, things started to get better for Kidd Kraddick when he was hired for the night shift on the top-40 radio station KEGL 97.1 The Eagle, which was located in Dallas. On the way to Dallas, he had to borrow cash and a car from his older brother because he didn’t have any with him.

Upon taking over the post, he instantly gained a following, especially among teenagers, because of his youthful voice. He was able to easily connect with his young audience, talking about ordinary teenage concerns to them. Because of this, he achieved a kind of popularity that’s comparable to that of boy-bands, and soon, he was being booked at popular hangouts. The Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey even said that he impersonated the radio host to be allowed to enter Dallas nightclubs.

By the start of the 90s, Kidd Kraddick was included in the United States Junior Chamber Ten Outstanding Young Americans list. Around this time, he left KEGL 97.1 The Eagle when it turned into a rock station.

He was out of work for eight months (which his friends have described as his “Dave in his underwear” period), but was able to launch two radio-oriented businesses with friends; the first one was the sharing service for air personalities, BitBoard, and the second one was the monthly publication called “The Morning Mouth.” The two businesses were both considered innovative, especially BitBoard; in the words of friend JB Hager, Kraddick “basically taught me, and the whole industry, how to get online.”

On top of that…

He also bagged two awards during this period, the Marconi Award for Major Market Radio Personality of the Year and the Radio Music Awards Air Personality of the Year award. Soon, he came back on the radio for the morning position at TOP 40 KHKS-106.1 Kiss FM.

His radio show “Kidd Kraddick in the Morning,” for which he was best known, premiered in 1992. Even after Kidd Kraddick’s death, the radio program still continues to air under the name “The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show,” featuring cast members Alaric “Big Al” Mack, Kellie Raspberry, Jenna Owens, and José “J-Si” Chavez.

Kidd Kraddick had made appearances in the TV shows “Dish Nation” and “To Serve and Protect.”

Aside from his work in the media, Kidd Kraddick was also known for his charity work. He was the founder of the charity organization Kidd’s Kids, which aims to “provide hope and happiness by creating beautiful memories for families of children with life-altering or life-threatening conditions.”

He was also at a charity event at the time of his death in 2013. It was concluded that the cause of his death was arteriosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
