The award-winning Dutch DJ, remixer, and record producer who’s best known for his revolutionary electronic music tracks and his powerful creative partnership with the French DJ and producer David Guetta hasn’t always been this successful.

But one thing’s for sure.

He’s been making music all of his life.

You’ve read it right. Nick van de Wall was already playing the piano when he was five years old.

Born on the 9th of September 1987, Nick grew up in the care of his single mother, Debbie van de Wall. But he was never short of uninspired because he once shared that Debbie supported his passion for music from the start.

For his whole childhood…

…the future MTV Europe Music Award victor used to listen to all kinds of music, widening his horizons and knowledge which he will later use in his music production.

When DJ Afrojack was 11 years old, he discovered a program that would be instrumental to his beginnings as a music producer. Nick got a hold of Fruity Loops and quickly got himself acquainted with the program.

Soon, his intense passion for creating his own songs and music surfaced and he was gradually building his own portfolio.

Afrojack still uses the program to this day.

Young Nick van de Wall studied Graphic Designing at Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam for a year before deciding to focus on his musical passion.

After finishing school…

…he set off to go all the way to becoming one of the richest DJs in the world.

At age 14, he started trying out DJing in local bars and clubs. But since he was just an amateur then, his income was still insufficient to fund the musical career he’s trying to build so he earned his extra income by designing the websites for his fellow musicians.

Soon, he was earning enough for him to finally discover and really penetrate the club scene in Rotterdam.

So, at 16 years old…

…Afrojack had his first real night out in the old club called Las Palmas and it’s all landslide victory for him from there as more club nights and deejaying followed.

Just some months shy of being 19, the ambitious Nick, who would soon be one of the highest paid DJs in the world, set off to explore more of the European dance scene, starting in Crete in Greece.

He deejayed there for the whole five months in every club that would accept him, learning his craft along the way.

Upon his return to the Netherlands…

…DJ record producer Nick produced more tracks with the goal of releasing his own music released on a label.

Fellow musicians Laidback Luke and Sidney Samson helped him and in no time, under the name Afrojack, he released In Your Face through Digidance.

And he didn’t fail all of them.

Soon, the track was sitting at #60 in the Dutch Top 100 and the 3rd spot in the Dutch Dance Top 30 list!

The kicker?

Afrojack was just almost 19 then!

Ambitious Nick then continued performing under the name Afrojack. He became more well-known with the song Take Over Control  with Eva Simons. This track charted in over 10 countries worldwide.

He was also given a part in episode 2 of Behind the Speedo, a comedy series by the American rapper Redfoo.

By 2011…

…Afrojack was already ranking on the 7th spot on the Top 100 DJs of 2011 by DJ Mag.

Whoa.

That’s also when he started his string of legendary collaborations with the biggest names in the industry.

After creating the Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, Afrojack released an EP named Lost  Found.

He’s also featured on Pitbull’s Give Me Everything along with the biggies Ne-Yo and Nayer.

In addition to that, he also contributed to Beyoncé’s hit Run the World (Girls).

In 2012, the young DJ was awarded the European Border Breakers Award, following the release of another successful single called The Spark with Spree Wilson, which charted on many countries’ top 10 lists.

And by 2013, Afrojack was already the 7th highest-earning DJ in the world.

Can you believe that?

He had also collaborated with legendary artists such as Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and Bebe Rexha.

In 2014, Afrojack released his debut album called Forget the World.

He’s also able to build not only a lasting business and creative partnership with the famous French DJ record producer David Guetta but a deep friendship with him, as well.

Together, they produced Hey Mama that’s performed by Minaj and Rexha.

They also did Toyfriend and Another Life.

Aside from David Guetta, he also collaborated with other DJs such as Steve Aoki for his 2016 documentary titled I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, which eventually got a Grammy Award nomination.

By 2019 to 2021, Afrojack was on and off the road and was trying to juggle his DJ and daddy duties.

He’s also awarded a Grammy Award for the remix of the song Revolver by Madonna which he worked on with David Guetta.

He had also won an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Dutch Act in 2011.
