The Guinness World Record-holding singer started his music career when he was a teenager. At first, he didn’t want his famous father, legendary Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, to know about his plans to become a singer, so he had to borrow money from his nanny to record a demo cassette tape containing two songs.

The determined young man approached Fernán Martínez, his father’s former publicist. Martinez helped him promote the two songs. Adamant to make it on his own and not with the help of his famous last name, he was first promoted under the stage name Enrique Martinez.

Shortly afterward, he was signed by music label Fonovisa Records, through which he released his debut album, “Enrique Iglesias,” in 1995. The album consisted of light rock ballads and included the hit songs “Si Tú Te Vas” and “Experiencia Religiosa.”

The album was an unexpected success, selling half a million copies in its first week, a feat for a non-English album. He would go on to win the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance for the album.

His success continued with the release of his second album, “Vivir,” which yielded three number-one singles on the Billboard’s Latin charts, “Enamorado Por Primera Vez,” “Sólo En Ti,” and “Miente.” The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album and won Pop Album of the Year at the 9th Lo Nuestro Award.

Enrique was a nominee for the first-ever awarded category of Favorite Latin Artist at the American Music Award in 1998.

On his first concert tour, he went to sixteen countries, playing to sold-out audiences.

His third album “Cosas del Amor” was released in 1998. His Cosas del Amor Tour was the first-ever concert tour sponsored by McDonald’s.

Enrique’s first English single was a big hit, topping the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Spanish Singles Chart.

Afterward, he found himself being sought after by several mainstream record labels. He signed with Interscope and released “Enrique,” his first fully English album. The album is notable for the songs “Could I Have This Kiss Forever,” a duet with Whitney Houston, and “Sad Eyes,” a Bruce Springsteen cover.

He started 2000 performing at the Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show with Christina Aguilera, Phil Collins, and Toni Braxton.

A mini-controversy arose when shock jock Howard Stern accused him of not being able to sing live. He then performed live at Stern’s radio show with just a guitar, proving that he really can sing live and very well at that.

Howard Stern, after watching him perform, said, “I respect you for coming in here; you really can sing.”

The “controversy” ended up doing Enrique more good than harm; he commented that it was the best promotion he could have. The album’s third single, “Be With You,” went on to become his second number-one single on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and was nominated for Grammy Best Dance Recording.

Just when everyone thought he had reached his peak success…

He released “Escape,” his second English album and his most commercially successful album to date. The album was even more successful than its predecessor, selling 8 million copies worldwide.

Its first single, “Hero” was not just commercially successful but also critically acclaimed. In fact, after the September 11 attacks, the iconic song was one of the songs chosen by radio DJs to be remixed with audio from police, firefighters, and civilians commenting on the attacks. Enrique also performed the song live at “America: A Tribute to Heroes.”

The other hit singles from the album, “Escape” and “Don’t Turn Off the Lights,” became radio staples.

Enrique continued his mainstream success with hit albums, singles, and sold-out world tours.

He went on a two-year hiatus, then released the album “Insomniac” in 2007. It included his collaboration with rapper Lil Wayne, “Push,” as well as the single “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Story)”, his highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 since “Escape.”

Enrique and Ricky Martin had plans for a 2020 world tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to 2021.
