Dean Ray Koontz was born on July 9, 1945, to Florence and Raymond Koontz.

He had a rough childhood.

Raymond was a violent alcoholic who abused his family. But even though Florence was small, she used to stand up to her husband courageously.

This usual scenery had a huge influence on his writing.

Before his fame…

… the young Dean already showed potential. He won a fiction writing competition during his senior year at Shippensburg University. He graduated in 1967.

He was an English teacher at Mechanicsburg High School before working for the Appalachian Poverty Program. Koontz claimed that the reality of disappearing funding changed his outlook on politics and the government.

He converted to Catholicism while he was in college.

Dean’s first novel was published in 1968.

After ‘Star Quest,’ Koontz wrote twelve more science fiction novels. He switched to thriller novels and horror fiction in the 1970s and published them under different pen names.

But it wasn’t until 1980 when he finally published his breakthrough novel ‘Whispers.’  Then his other books started to sell. Though written under his pseudonyms, The Key to Midnight and The Funhouse sold over a million copies.

But his first bestseller – selling two million copies in a single year – was Demon Seed.’ Its movie adaptation surely helped.

‘Odd Thomas,’ ‘Black River,’ ‘Watcher,’ and ‘The Passengers’ are only some of his books that also had movie adaptations.

By 2008…

Koontz has become one of the highest-paid authors in the world!

He tied with John Grisham at sixth. And even now, you can hear his name alongside Stephen King, Jeffrey Archer, Barbara Taylor Bradford – and one of his inspirations – Richard Stark.

Besides that…

He’s also won much recognition like the Ross Macdonald Literary Award, World Horror Convention Grand Master Award, etc.

Psychologist Katherine Ramsland wrote a psychobiography of Koontz in 1997 too. She stated in her book that most of Dean’s characterizations are derived from his abusive childhood.

But most of all – almost all of his novels secured a spot on the New York Times Bestsellers list!

Today…

Dean lives with his wife, Gerda Ann Cerra Koontz, in Newport Coast, California. So that’s why most of his novels are set in Orange County!

The couple chose not to have children. Dean feared that his kids could inherit his father’s mental illnesses, so he and his wife agreed not to take the risk.

Instead, the bestselling author and his wife devote themselves to their golden retrievers, Trixie and Anna. These adorable ones are said to have inspired ‘Evening of the year’ as well as some of Dean’s pen names.
