The Personal Life of Virgil Abloh

 Virgil Abloh was born in Rockford, Illinois, on September 30, 1980, to his Ghanaian parents. His mom worked as a seamstress, while his dad ran a paint company business.

Virgil Abloh was born and grew up in Rockford, Illinois, where he graduated from Boylan Catholic High School in 1998.

As for his educational background,  Virgil Abloh earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002.  Then, in 2006, he graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) with a Master of Architecture degree.

Moreover, Virgil Abloh managed to meet Kanye West, a renowned musician, while working on his designs at Chicago Print Shop.

In 2009, Abloh worked as an intern at Fendi in the very same class as rapper Kanye West following graduation.   The two started collaborating after being assigned to the company’s Rome, Italy office.

Through his job at Fendi, he got the interest of Michael Burke, the CEO of Louis Vuitton, throughout his collaboration with the designer and rapper Kanye West.

…Later that year, Abloh and West’s creative associate, Don C, opened the RSVP Gallery, a retail store in Chicago. Their newly opened retail space became known for producing various fashion clothing and reflecting Virgil’s style in the store’s interior design.

Abloh was designated as the creative director of West’s creative agency, DONDA, a year later after all his hard work.

In 2011, Kanye West approached him to be the creative director for the Jay-Z/West album Watch the Throne, released in 2011.

Pyrex Vision, a streetwear brand, Abloh’s first company, was founded in 2012. Pyrex Vision’s stated aim was to reflect the value of youth culture by focusing the design concepts on a garment that most teenagers would notice in physical education class.

Abloh represented the company based in Milan, Italy, to shareholders and fashion critics as “the gray area between black and white as the color off-white.” Virgil Abloh opened his first concept store, Off white, in Tokyo, Japan, where he also introduced the company’s furniture division, (design furniture) Grey Area.
