Simon Phillip Cowell, known popularly as Simon Cowell, is a successful TV personality, entrepreneur, and record executive. He has been first widely recognized as the judge on the British television talent shows  “Pop Idol” and “American Idol.”

His signature phrase, “I don’t mean to be rude, but…” is what makes his fame grow bigger.

And because of that…

In 2002, Cowell started his label and production company, Syco Entertainment, divided into three units: Syco Music, Syco Film, and Syco TV, which deals with music, television, and digital content. 

Through Syco, Simon created shows like “The X Factor” and “Got Talent” franchises which have been adapted and been sold around the world.

Simon is not known as a skilled talent hunter for no reason. Many single artists, including Leona Lewis, Noah Cyrus, Sussan Boyle, Olly Murs, Cher Lloyd, Fleur East, Susan Boyle, James Arthur, and Labrinth, have been taken under his wings and produced successful singles and albums.

And that’s just one side of the story…

He also signed successful bands who sold million-dollar records, including II Divo, One Direction, Fifth Harmony, and Little Mix.

But it is true that in every success, there is great work behind it. Great success is always associated with the name Simon Cowell. But it’s not always been easy, and it hasn’t been a smooth sail for Simon.

So let’s see his humble beginnings, struggles, and what his journey was like.

To begin with…

When he was younger, Simon worked several odd jobs, such as working as a runner on Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film “The Shining” and working in the mailroom at EMI Music Publishing.

Through hard work, he was able to work his way up and eventually reached the position of assistant to an A&R executive.

Cowell left EMI Music Publishing and formed his label E&S Music together with his former boss from EMI in the early 1980s. However, he quit in 1983 and founded Fanfare Records with his colleague Iain Burton.

It gets better…

Simon had his first hit song, “So Macho,” sung by Sinitta in 1986. They also started selling exercise videos and famous pieces of music such as Rondò Veneziano, an Italian orchestra specializing in Baroque music.

Despite their success, they were forced to shut down in 1989. 

But wait, there’s more…

Simon then offered an A&R consultant position to BMG and set up S Records, where he created novelty records including acts involving “Power Rangers,” “Zig and Zag,” and even the “World Wrestling Federation.”

He made his first million when he persuaded two actors Robson Green and Jerome Flynn, through his persistence, to sign with him and record the song “Unchained Melody” in 1995.

The duo, now named Robson & Jerome, quickly reached number 1 in the UK. Their single became the best-selling single of 1995 and their self-titled album, released later in the year, also became the best-selling album of 1995.

After the disbandment of the duo, Simon signed the famous Irish boy band Westlife, British boy band Five and the British children’s television series “Teletubbies.”

Which leads us to…

The start of Cowell’s unstoppable stardom and success.

Simon, labeled as a skilled talent scout and hunter when he was first given a role of a judge on the first series of a music competition, “Pop Idol” in 2001 and in“ American Idol” in 2002.

 And in 2004, through his own production company Syco TV, he created “The X Factor,” which become an instant success followed by “America’s Got Talent” and “British Got Talent.”

Simon co-produced ABC’s famous show “American Inventor,” formed the game show “Red or Black,” executive produced ITV’s “Grease is the Word,” created the show aired on BBC “The Greatest Dancer” in 2019, made a guest appearance in an episode of “The Simpsons,” and judged in the “Canadian Family’s Got Talent,” a spin-off online version of “Canada’s Got Talent” during the pandemic.
