Ma Long is a professional table tennis player known for his nicknames ‘The Dictator’ and ‘The Dragon’ and is considered one of the best forehand attackers in table tennis history. He’s the current titleholder for the Olympics in 2016 and 2020.

Ma’s also the titleholder for the World Championships in men’s singles in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

To begin with…

Ma started playing table tennis as early as five years old. His parents thought that playing a sport like this; an injury-free non-contact sport was good for his health.

Ma played at the ‘baby cup’ at the age of ten. He represented his primary school and won the boy’s singles and team event.

And due to this, he earned a place at the Liaoning Provincial Team a year after.

At the age of thirteen, he was scouted in a team in Beijing, and at fifteen, he was selected for the Chinese National Team.

Ma became the youngest world champion at seventeen for winning the World Junior Championship held in Kobe, Japan, in 2004.

Ma won another gold medal again alongside Wang Ha, Ma Lin, Wang Hao, and Chen Qi, also famous table tennis players, at the Men’s team in the 2006 World Championship held in Bremen, Germany.

Asian Championships (2007-2013)

He has sweep victories at the different Championships, including the Asian Championships; the Men’s Singles, Doubles, Men’s Team, and Mixed.

2013-2015 Journey

Ma had a great start for the year 2013.

He won the China Open at two different locations beating two of the best players, Wang and Xu Xin.

His success continued as he won the Asian Cup in March 2014.

Not only that…

Ma didn’t lose a single game at the 2014 World Table Tennis Championship.

Later that year, Ma was awarded the Victor Barna Award as the tournament’s best player for beating the German player Timo Boll and Ukrainian player Dimitrij Ovtharov.

Ma started his 2015 by winning at Kuwait Open and German Open.

He also won the straight-six games against Fang Bo at the 2015 World Championships.

Due to injury, Ma suffered a career setback when he didn’t compete at the Asian Competition and two World Tour Tournaments.

He participated in the 2015 World Cup in Halmstad, Sweden.

2016 Grand Slam and Olympics 

Ma, being undefeated until the final, won the German Open without losing a game. This has resulted in his three-straight World Team Championships.

Even though he was defeated in the Kuwait Open, he won the Qatar Open, making him the record-breaker for most International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Singles Titles by a Chinese player.

It gets better…

Ma won the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, which resulted in his direct qualification in the 2016 Olympics In Rio de Janeiro

And better…

Due to his No.1 ranking, Ma was automatically qualified in the third round in the singles.

He beat Denmark’s Jonathan Groth in the first round but was defeated by Korea’s Jung Young-Sik in the next round.

But he gained his confidence back by winning the next four games and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Ma defeated the first African player to make it to the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics, Quadri Aruna, in the four-straight games.

For the semi-finals, Ma beat Japan’s top player, Jun Mizutani.

This led him to face the Olympic champion Zhang Jike.

He won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Zhang in four straight games, the first four-game sweep in an Olympic singles final.

2017-2019 Journey

Ma started 2017 by winning his second year in a row in Qatar Open.

Though Ma suffered from several injuries, he still participated at the World Championships held in Dusseldorf, Germany, and played in National Games and World Cup.

But wait, there’s more…

This year was one of the most memorable years for Ma because it was when he welcomed his firstborn child.

Such a memorable year!

Ma’s world ranking did drop from 1st to the 9th; because of his inactivity.

However…

Amidst his low ranking, he participated in the 2018 World Team Cup and made his presence felt by staying undefeated in both singles and doubles.

He also won his fifth German Open and China Open.

But due to his knee injury, he couldn’t participate in the rest of the 2018 tournaments, including the World Cup, the Austrian Open, the Swedish Open, and the World Tour Grand Finals.

Turns out…

His injuries continued the following year. This prevented him from participating in the Marvellous 12, a qualifying event in China.

But here’s the kicker…

He ended his 2019 with a blast by beating Sweden’s Mattias and winning his third consecutive World Championship. 

Due to this…

He broke the record again for being the first player to win such three titles since Wang Liqin and the first to win them consecutively since Zhuang Zedong.

Such a good end to the year!

 2020 Olympics Journey

It was no surprise that Ma Long would be “bringing home the bacon” by winning the 2020 Olympics.

He then became the first player in table tennis history to win consecutive gold medals in the men’s singles event.

Whoa!
