American rapper Plies became popular after he released his debut album. In the late ’90s, Plies teamed up with his stepbrother Ronnell Lavalette, better known as Big Gates, and established an independent record label called Big Gates Records.

Initially, Plies refused to rap, but after recording a demo for one of their artists, Big Gates decided to keep Plies’ rap verse on the track Tell Dem Krackers Dat. The late 1990s-2004

Plies has worked in the background with his brother, Big Gates, on their independent record label Big Gates Records, during the late 1990s.

In 2004, Plies was offered to sign a deal with Slip n Slide Records after his rap verse on Tell Dem Krackers Dat has achieved positive recognition. He then released several mixtapes, and his music career took off. 

2007 – 2009

In 2007, Plies released his first major-label debut album called The Real Testament. Upon its release, the album was well-received by music critics. The Real Testament sold 96,000 copies in its first week of release and debuted at number two on Billboard 200. 

The album features guest appearances by Akon, Tank, and T-Pain.

And it doesn’t stop there…

His debut single Shawty featuring T-Pain peaked at nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart. Plies released a single titled Hypnotized featuring Akon, and it peaked at number 3 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart and 14 on the Hot 100. 

Plies made guest appearances on DJ Khaled’s second album, I’m So Hood, which peaked at 19 on the Hot 100.

His second album, Definition of Real, was released in June 2008, ten months after releasing his debut album.

Plies was cashing in on his fame and took the opportunity to release as many tracks as possible during his golden era. 

The lead single on this album was Bust It Baby Pt. 2 featuring Ne-Yo, which peaked at number 2 on the Hot Rap Tracks and Hot R&B Tracks and number 7 on the Hot 100. 

The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200. Plies’ hit single Bust It Baby Pt. 2 and the album Definition of Real was both certified Gold by RIAA in that same year.

Plies’ third album, De REAList, was released in December 2008, six months after his previous album. It debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 with over 114,000 copies sold in its first week. 

The album featured artists such as Chris J and Ashanti.  He guest-starred on Ludacris’ single Nasty Girl from his album Theatre of the Mind

Plies has appeared on DJ Khaled’s single Out Here Grindin, featuring Akon and Rick Ross, from his album We Global.

2010 – 2019

On June 8, 2010, Plies released his fourth album Goon Affiliated. The album contained singles such as Becky, and She Got It Made featuring Bei Maejor. The album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200. 

In 2010, Plies released three mixtapes; You Need People Like Me, You Need People Like Me Pt. 2, and No Chaser.

Plies was arrested in 2017 for DUI. He was caught driving while drunk at Wesley Chapel, Florida. He was taken to custody after refusing to undergo roadside blood alcohol content testing.

Illegal Possession of Weapons (2006)

In July 2006, Plies was charged with illegal possession of a concealed weapon after shooting at a Florida nightclub. Five people were injured, and members of his entourage were charged with attempted murder. 

The shooting happened when his mic was cut off to make way for Lil Boosie’s performance. This caused Plies to lose his marbles and started a fistfight before firing at least six rounds of bullets with his gun.
