“Crank That” – 2007

It was in 2007 that Way released his first track called “Crank That” which contributed to his sudden popularity worldwide. The track also topped the Billboard charts and gave him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song of 2007 and a dance craze was also based on the song.

He launched his first solo album Souljaboytellem.com and following this success he signed with Interscope Records.

He was able to release another album in 2008, which became a follow-up to his first one. This was entitled iSouljaBoyTellem, and had famous tracks like “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” where he collaborated with singer Sammie, and chart-topper “Bird Walk”.

His third album The DeAndre Way was released in 2010 after he made mixtapes from the earlier parts of the year. This album wasn’t his best since it only sold about 70,000 copies and it ended up the lowest-selling album he has ever made.

Way’s record deal expired in 2013 – which led to several delays on his fourth album release, however, he was still able to publish mixtapes and EPs during this year. He collaborated with Drake on his intro track “We Made It” from his The King mixtape.

In early 2008, Way found himself in the middle of a feud with fellow rapper, Ice-T, the two exchanged their views through videos on the internet. In addition to that, another rapper – Charles Hamilton talked about how Way made it hard for new artists to join forces with record labels.

In 2009, Way challenged Bow Wow to a race using their Lamborghinis and added that the latter’s Lambo was ‘only a rental’.

Later on, Bow Wow verified he owned the Lamborghini and it wasn’t a rental as claimed by Way.

The U.S. Armed Forces banned Way’s album in 2011 from being sold in their base exchanges. This was because of his controversial song “Let’s Be Real” in which he dissed army troops in one of its lines.

Way’s social media accounts and email were compromised by a hacker – this resulted in a number of death threats to Chief Keef, a rapper based in Chicago.
