It was in 2007 that Way released his first track called “Crank That” which contributed to his sudden popularity worldwide. The track also topped the Billboard charts and gave him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song of 2007 and a dance craze was also based on the song.
He launched his first solo album Souljaboytellem.com and following this success he signed with Interscope Records.
iSouljaBoyTellem – 2008
He was able to release another album in 2008, which became a follow-up to his first one. This was entitled iSouljaBoyTellem, and had famous tracks like “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” where he collaborated with singer Sammie, and chart-topper “Bird Walk”.
DeAndre Way – 2010
His third album The DeAndre Way was released in 2010 after he made mixtapes from the earlier parts of the year. This album wasn’t his best since it only sold about 70,000 copies and it ended up the lowest-selling album he has ever made.
We Made It – 2013
Way’s record deal expired in 2013 – which led to several delays on his fourth album release, however, he was still able to publish mixtapes and EPs during this year. He collaborated with Drake on his intro track “We Made It” from his The King mixtape.
Collaborations – 2014
Even though he didn’t release an album this year, it was in 2014 when he began to collaborate with many known people from the music industry – like Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Drake, Migos, Young Thug, and Wiz Khalifa.
Loyalty – 2015
After a long hiatus, Way signed a contract with Universal Music Group – releasing his fourth album, Loyalty in 2015. Aside from that, he also produced his digital album that features several artists like Troy Ave, Chief Keef, Migos, and many others.
Fifth and Sixth Albums – 2016
Both his fifth and sixth digital albums were produced in 2016, at the same time, he also released numerous singles and music videos. He even published a collab retail mixtape with Bow Wow (whom he had a feud with in the past) in the same year.
How Can You Blame Me – 2019
He then produced singles and mixtapes throughout the year despite announcing he was preparing his new album titled How Can You Blame Me? Its release was delayed due to his imprisonment.
Scandal & Controversies
Just like any other celebrity, Way has had his own fair share of controversies that triggered the curiosity of different media outlets. And to dig deeper on that, let’s take a look at the issues Way encountered throughout the years.
Soulja Boy vs Ice-T 2008
In early 2008, Way found himself in the middle of a feud with fellow rapper, Ice-T, the two exchanged their views through videos on the internet. In addition to that, another rapper – Charles Hamilton talked about how Way made it hard for new artists to join forces with record labels.
Soulja Boy vs Bow Wow 2009
In 2009, Way challenged Bow Wow to a race using their Lamborghinis and added that the latter’s Lambo was ‘only a rental’.
Later on, Bow Wow verified he owned the Lamborghini and it wasn’t a rental as claimed by Way.
Soulja Boy vs U.S. Army 2011
The U.S. Armed Forces banned Way’s album in 2011 from being sold in their base exchanges. This was because of his controversial song “Let’s Be Real” in which he dissed army troops in one of its lines.
Soulja Boy vs Hopsin 2012
In 2012, Way and Hopsin had a confrontation on the former’s Tinychat regarding their exchange of comments towards each other in the early weeks of August.
Sadly, the two didn’t resolve their issues and Way released a diss track for Hopsin entitled “That Nigga Not Me”.
Soulja Boy vs Chief Keef 2013
Way’s social media accounts and email were compromised by a hacker – this resulted in a number of death threats to Chief Keef, a rapper based in Chicago.
In the end, Way and Keef fixed their differences and settled their issue.
Soulja Boy vs Chris Brown 2017
Way’s 2017 started with a fiasco with well-known singer Chris Brown – it was due to Way intimidating model Karrueche Tran (Brown’s girlfriend during that time). It was immediately solved when Way expressed his remorse to Brown and his fans the next day.
Soulja Boy vs Jake Paul 2019
YouTuber Jake Paul publicly tweeted Way and said that he wanted to “box Soulja Boy”, Way instantly replied that he would knock Paul out. This led to a series of confrontations, and Paul even went to Way’s home to talk officially about the match he was requesting.
