Tracy Morgan, the famous American actor and Saturday Night Live cast actually built his comedic career on a tragic event.

After his father died when he was just around 17 years old, the future actor Tracy Morgan married his high school girlfriend.

They were living on welfare aid for a while.

He’s also selling crack cocaine for a while but with limited success. Regarding this, Tracy once said in an interview that he’s a “crack dealer with a heart of gold.”

His comedic talent was already getting noticed by some of his friends but he himself wasn’t able to recognize it until later on.

Until his friend was murdered.

One of Tracy’s first fans, his friend from “the hood” told him that he’s funny and should be doing comedy.

The next week, that friend was dead.

And to honor his friend’s wishes, Tracy Morgan resorted to starting his comedy career on the streets to earn a living.

Fortunately…

…he didn’t make a mistake because soon enough, he’s doing it on stage.

Tracy had to do comedy on the streets for a few years before his talent was finally picked up by the locals.

Later on, he was invited to open shows for different DJs. He did this for a while before leveling it up yet another step.

Tracy made it as a part of Harlem’s Uptown Comedy Club and later on, became a member of the national comedy circuit.

But despite his growing success…

…the would-be American actor felt a little guilt. Of this, and referring to his dead friend, he shared:

“ I had my survival guilt when I started to achieve success. Why I made it out and some guys didn’t.”

And finally…

…his budding comedy career was so good that Tracy was able to move his family to a nice place in Riverdale, a community in the Bronx. He went from living in a shabby apartment next to the Yankee Stadium to a nicer and safer neighborhood.

Tracy Morgan had first national exposure with the HBO series Def Comedy Jam, in which he appeared twice.

And it kept coming.

Tracy then became a regular on the sketch comedy show Uptown Comedy Club which aired from 1992 to 1994.

The next year, Tracy appeared in another HBO series called Snaps.

In addition to these, he was also cast on several more television shows such as the sitcom Martin in which he played the role of Hustle Man.

Then came one of his biggest breaks.

In 1996, Tracy Morgan joined the cast of the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

And just like the comedy genius that he is, Tracy became one of the show’s most memorable casts, having invented some of the best-remembered characters such as Brian Fellow’s Safari Planet, Astronaut Jones, Dominican Lou from the Bronx, Bert the bailiff from Judge Judy.

In addition to this…

…Tracy Morgan also became a crowd favorite with his remarkable impersonations such as that of Maya Angelou, Cuba Gooding Jr, Star Jones, Earl Woods, Mike Tyson, Tito Jackson, Busta Rhymes, and Mr. T among many other personalities.

Morgan performed as a regular on SNL until 2003 but he returned as a host in March 2009, reliving his roles as Astronaut Jones, as well as Brian Fellow.

Actor Tracy Morgan also made a guest appearance on SNL on its Christmas show in 2011 that’s hosted by Jimmy Fallon.

Then in 2015, he returned yet again as a host to the program.

Tracy also bagged some movies. In 2003, he starred in the movie Head of State alongside his fellow comedian Chris Rock.

After Saturday Night Live…

…Tracy had his own sitcom in 2003, titled The Tracy Morgan Show, which aired on NBC and is about a working-class family.

Unfortunately, the show only lasted for four months before it was canceled after just one season.

By this time, Tracy was already struggling with alcohol abuse, which he reportedly picked up while working on Saturday Night Live.

But it turns out, there’s more in store for him.

Tina Fey, his fellow former SNL co-star offered him a role in the TV sitcom 30 Rock alongside actor Alec Baldwin.

Tracy played the character Tracy Jordan, a sometimes clueless but energetic caricature of Tracy Morgan himself.

Here’s the kicker.

His performance for 30 Rock was well-received and praised by the critics. As a matter of fact, he even got an Emmy Awards nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2009 for his role as Tracy Jordan.

The show ran for 7 well-received seasons and became one of the most popular TV shows at that time.

In 2020, Tracy returned to his 30 Rock role for a reunion episode that’s an upfront special for NBC Universal.

In 2018…

…Tracy began appearing on The Last O.G., a comedy TV series by Jordan Peele. He’s playing the role of Tray Barker, an ex-convict.

He also guest-starred on Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone the next year.

Aside from being a comedian…

…Tracy Morgan also tried his hands on being a voice actor!

As a matter of fact, his voice can be heard in the animated movie Rio, in which he played the character of Luis. (Catch this adorable film right HERE!)

We can also hear him on the Comedy Central program called Crank Yankers as Spoonie Luv as well as in the animated program called Where my Dogs At?

He also appeared in the films Jay and the Silent Bob Strike Back as the Pumpkin Man, Cop Out alongside the icon Bruce Willis, as well as in Adam Sandler’s The Longest Yard, playing the role of a transgender inmate.

Truly, he has come a long way from being an unintentional comedian to a flexible actor.

Tracy Jamal Morgan was born on November 10, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York.

His mother, Alicia Warden was a homemaker and his father Jimmy Morgan was a musician. Young Tracy is the second child out of five children.

Tracy Jamal was named after his father’s friend while Jimmy Morgan was still serving in the Army in the Vietnam War.

Jimmy’s friend was then shipped off to Vietnam and was killed later on.

Young Tracy spent much of his childhood in Bedford-Stuyvesant, in the Tompkins Houses.

Then his parents separated when he was just six years old.

But he didn’t lose contact with his father and they remained close. As a matter of fact, he credits Jimmy Morgan with teaching him how to tell a good story.

At age thirteen, Tracy left his mother’s home and lived in the subway cars and basically rode back and forth until he showed up on his father’s doorsteps, “smelling like an ass.”

A bitter custody hearing soon happened and his father got custody.

Here’s the kicker.

According to his autobiography (check it out HERE), Tracy had a young girl of 14 years old have “real sex” with him when he was just 8, which made him cry afterward.

He then proceeded to say that she didn’t molest him, rather she was just “inquisitive” but the trauma in his story was evident in his memoir.

He became sexually active at 12 and when his father died of AIDS when he was around 19 years old, he went on to try his hand at the drug trade.

Tracy never mentioned anything about trauma but many critics and readers believe that it’s the overall theme of his autobiography.

Now, that’s what they call ‘dark humor’.

Tracy Morgan High School – DeWitt Clinton High School

Tracy Morgan attended the DeWitt Clinton High School. His life while studying proved to be one of his most difficult times.

In his second year when he was just 17 they found out that his father, Jimmy Morgan had contracted AIDS through a hypodermic use of a needle.

Later on…

…Tracy decided to drop out of school to aid his dying father. He was just 4 units away from getting his diploma.

Tracy Morgan Controversies

In the wee hours of June 7, 2014, Tracy Morgan was one of the passengers of a Mercedes Sprinter Minibus traveling through New Jersey.

Just a little after 1 AM, the vehicle was struck from behind by a Walmart truck. It was a chain crash involving a few other vehicles.

Tracy was then with 3 other comedians including James McNair and Harris Stanton, as well as his assistant and two limousine company employees.

Sadly…

James McNair, Morgan’s friend, died while Tracy was brought to the hospital in a helicopter.

He suffered a cerebrum injury as well as a broken nose, a broken leg, and broken ribs. He was transferred to a rehab center before being released the next month after the incident.

Now, here’s the kicker.

The Walmart tractor trailer driver Kevin Roper pleaded not guilty to the case of one count of death by auto and four counts of assaults by auto.

The complaint stated that Roper had been awake for more than 24 hours at the time of the accident, having been forced by Walmart to drive from his home to a far Walmart distribution center that’s worth 11 hours of driving.

Morgan sued Walmart but later on, Walmart shifted the blame on Morgan and his company for allegedly not wearing seatbelts.

Seriously!

The victims denied the claim, stating that the police report even stated that wearing seatbelts was not an issue.

In 2015, Walmart settled the lawsuit with an undisclosed amount.
