Judd Apatow is famous for being the executive producer, film director, and writer for beloved comedies like “The 40-year-old Virgin”, “Superbad,” “Knocked Up,” and “Bridesmaids.” He is the founder of Apatow Productions and a recipient of many awards, including a Hollywood Comedy Award, an AFI Award, and an Emmy Award.

An avid comedy lover since childhood, Judd Apatow got his first taste of the comedy world when he worked as a dishwasher at the Long Island East Side Comedy Club while still in high school.

As a college student, he started doing stand-up comedy at the Improv in Hollywood, where he met fellow comedian Adam Sandler, who would later star in his movie “Funny People.” The two future comedy stars shared an apartment after Judd dropped out of college.

It didn’t take long before he officially started his career in comedy…

In 1991, he was hired as a writer for that year’s Grammy Awards. The following year, he was featured on HBO’s 15th Annual Young Comedians Special.

He was the executive producer and one of the creators of the Fox sketch comedy show “The Ben Stiller Show.” The critically acclaimed series won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program in 1993.

More Emmy nominations followed after he worked on HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show” as its writer and consulting producer and later as its final season’s co-executive producer and director.

His other notable works around this period include co-writing the film “Heavyweights”; doing uncredited rewrites for the films “The Cable Guy,” “Liar Liar,” “Bruce Almighty,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Wedding Singer”; and being featured on his friend Adam Sandler’s comedy album “What the Hell Happened to Me?”.

In 1999, he executive produced the TV series “Freaks and Geeks,” which won many awards and will later appear in many “greatest shows of all time” lists. It’s also now known as the show that launched the careers of actors such as Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Jason Segel.

Among one of Judd’s first hit movies was 2004’s “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” a satirical comedy he produced. It’s now considered one of the best comedy films of the 2000s. It would be followed by a sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”, in 2013.

The following year, Judd Apatow made his directorial debut with “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”, which he co-wrote with the film’s lead actor, Steve Carell. The movie was a huge success that it was even included in AFI’s Top Movies of the Year, on top of many award nominations. Judd was nominated for Writers Guild of America Best Original Screenplay for the movie.

The late 2000s saw Judd enjoying more success and critical acclaim with the box office hits “Superbad,” “Knocked Up,” “Pineapple Express,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “You Don’t Mess with Zohan.”

He started the 2010s with a bang, producing the highly successful “Bridesmaids,” his first film to be nominated for an Academy Award. The female-led comedy is regarded as a game-changer in the comedy world, pioneering a new kind of raunchy, female-centric comedy.

His other projects in the early 2010s include the TV show “Girls,” the comedy films “Wanderlust,” “The Five-Year Engagement,” and “This is 40”, a spin-off of “Knocked Up,” starring Paul Rudd and Judd’s wife Leslie Mann in the leading roles.

He also produced the musical comedy-drama “Begin Again” in 2013 and directed the Amy Schumer-written “Trainwreck” in 2015. Schumer often credits “Bridesmaids” when discussing her film.

Judd created and executive-produced the 2016 Netflix romantic comedy series “Love.” That same year, he made his first documentary, “Doc and Darryl.”

He came back with another award-winning romantic comedy in 2017 with “The Big Sick,” a film about an interethnic couple and their struggles with cultural differences. The film won many accolades, including the Critics’ Choice Best Movie Award. AFI selected it as one of their Top Ten Films of the year, and it became one of 2017’s highest-grossing independent films.

In that same year, he starred in his first stand-up, “Judd Apatow: The Return,” made a cameo appearance in the film “The Disaster Artist” and co-directed the documentary “May It Last: A Portrait Of The Avett Brothers.”

In 2018, he directed and produced another documentary, “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling,” about the life and legacy of his mentor and friend, comedian Garry Shandling. It won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

2020 saw the release of Judd’s 12th film, “The King of Staten Island,” a semi-autobiographical film loosely based on the life of the film’s star and co-writer, Pete Davidson. It was released on VOD to positive reviews.
