When he was 13 years old, he watched Woody Allen’s Take The Money and Run.

And then…

Three years later, he saw the movie Lenny,” starring Dustin Hoffman. Because he liked the movie a lot and wanted to listen to Lenny Bruce, he went to a record store.

That’s where he discovered that Woody Allen does stand-up comedy, too.

He bought “Woody Allen: The Nightclub Years, ‘64-’68”, from which he learned routines he imitated. He also learned how to write a joke with that.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in drama in 1979, he went on to study acting at the Film Actors Workshop with Tony Barr.

Opinion About Cancel Culture

In June 2021, Lovitz criticized the cancel culture; an online practice likened to modern-day witch hunts. He said, “If you don’t have the ability to laugh at yourself, don’t go to a comedy club. I’m not changing my act. If you’re watching TV and you don’t like the show, change the channel. It’s very simple.”

In addition…

He defended “The Goldbergs” actor Bryan Callen who was accused of rape and sexual misconduct in 2020.

Criticism of Barack Obama

In April 2012, the public heard Lovitz call former President Barack Obama a “f***ing a**hole” on a recording of his January 2012 show. As a Democrat, Lovitz voted for him in the 2008 Presidential Elections.

However…

He said in an interview that he felt that Obama betrayed him. Due to his criticism, some people accused him of being racist, but he defended himself by claiming that he doesn’t look at Obama as “a race,” but he looks at him as “a man.”

Dispute with Andy Dick

In July 2007, Lovitz smashed Andy Dick’s head and back in a bar at the Laugh Factory.

Here’s how it started…

Lovitz and Dick had a mutual friend – Phil Hartman.

Phil Hartman died on May 28, 1998, because his wife Brynn killed him before killing herself.

Then…

Lovitz and Dick became co-stars in “NewsRadio.” Lovitz said that Dick’s constant complaining about his arrival to the show led to an argument where Lovitz accused Dick of contributing to Hartman’s death.

According to Lovitz…

Brynn, who’s a recovering addict and had been sober for ten years, began using drugs again because Dick gave her cocaine at a Christmas party in 1997.

They made up after the argument, but…

In early 2007, Dick and Lovitz met in a restaurant, and Dick was drunk. He told Lovitz that he’s putting a “Phil Hartman hex” on him – that Lovitz would be the next to die.

Lovitz told Dick’s friend to take him out of the restaurant.

Later…

They met at the Laugh Factory lobby. Lovitz wanted an apology, but Dick told him he said that because the first thing Lovitz said to Dick after getting on “NewsRadio” was that he killed Hartman.

That’s when Lovitz smashed Dick’s head and back. He said he would have continued if the doorman didn’t stop him.

How Lovitz Spends His Money

Lovitz is a private person, so there is no information about any of his collections. But we’re sure he uses part of his money to maintain his house and car.
