The Young Mannie Fresh

Byron Otto Thomas, now known as Mannie Fresh, was born on March 20, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. His father, DJ Sabu, was the one who influenced him to pursue his music career.
He wasn’t initially interested in music.
Kids around him would get a bike or an Atari game for Christmas gifts, but he would get instruments as Christmas gifts. Turntable, trumpet, keyboards, little drum machines, horns, you name it.
The poor instruments piled up left untouched.
He was 12 years old when he started taking an interest and fiddling with the turntable and his copies of Chic’s “Good Times.”
At 13 years old, his father let him help move his DJ-ing equipment and records to his gigs at “hole-in-the-wall spots.”
What made him want to work as a DJ…
was seeing women go crazy whenever his dad played.
What made him explore what he could do as a DJ was “Planet Rock,” though.
Mannie Fresh High School
Mannie Fresh attended Joseph S. Clark Preparatory High School in Treme. The brass band music he heard while attending there helped shape his sense of creating music.
Mannie Fresh Family & Relationships
Mannie Fresh Dad, DJ Sabu
He was one of New Orleans’ best DJs in the early 1980s. DJ Sabu gifted Mannie Fresh instruments to spark his interest in music.
DJ Sabu provided for his family, Mannie Fresh and his family and illegitimate sons, thanks to his job as a street DJ.
Mannie Fresh Sister, Angela Bryant
Angela Bryant is one of Mannie Fresh’s sisters. She was found dead with a gunshot in 2007.
And that’s all for Mannie Fresh’s personal life! Next up, we’re tuning in to see how his career developed over the years.
Mannie Fresh Career
When Mannie Fresh was just 15 years old, he became a DJ for New York Incorporated, a New Orleans hip-hop crew. He formed the group with DJ Wop, Denny D, and Mia X.
And then…
Sometime in the 1980s, he became an intern on a local radio company. Once, they asked him if he knew any rappers, and Fresh mentioned MC Gregory D.
They told him to contact him, and so he did.
Gregory D delivered a freestyle rap, and they liked it.
But there was a problem.
They have no one who could produce music.
Mannie Fresh didn’t let the opportunity pass.
He told them that he could program drums and play.
Luckily, the people in the studio gave him a chance.
They came up with a song.
It was the Freddy Krueger theme song, “Freddie’s Back.”
It looks like Gregory D liked it a lot because he suggested that they form a group after that.
Fun fact: They put the song together in three hours!
Their first album “Throwdown” was released in 1987. Mannie Fresh produced it while MC Gregory D rapped.
Then, they released “D Rules the Nation” in 1989 and “The Real Deal or No Deal” in 1992.
They had creative differences, though, and, eventually, decided to split up.
Cash Money Records (1993-2005)
Mannie Fresh briefly went back to his DJ-ing gigs, performing for house parties and clubs in New Orleans.
That is until he met Bryan “Baby” Williams, now known as Birdman.
Birdman offered him to be the in-house producer for his newly-built record label Cash Money Records.
That was the time when Mannie Fresh’s career took off.
He produced all the albums of the Hot Boys, a group composed of B.G., Lil Wayne, Juvenile, and Turk. He produced for each of their works, too!
That’s not all…
A lot of the singles he produced charted. Among them are:
- “Back That Azz Up“, Juvenile (peaked at #19 in the US in 1999)
- “Bling Bling”, B.G. (peaked at #36 in the US in 1999)
- “Tha Block Is Hot“, Lil Wayne (peaked at #65 in the US in 1999)
- “Still Fly“, Big Tymers (peaked at #11 in the US in 2002)
- “In My Life”, Juvenile (peaked at #46 in the US in 2003)
- “Go D.J.“, Lil Wayne (peaked at #14 in the US in 2004)
Fun fact: Cash Money Records popularized the term “bling-bling” for diamond-flooded jewelry.)
Wait, there’s more…

- How You Luv That Vol. 2 (1998)
- I Got That Work (2000)
- Hood Rich (2002)
- Big Money Heavyweight (2003)
Sadly, some things must come to an end.
In 2005, Mannie Fresh left Cash Money Records while there were accusations of Cash Money withholding millions of dollars of royalties.
Fresh was honest about leaving because of money issues.
Nevertheless, Mannie Fresh undoubtedly contributed a lot to the company, as Mannie produced tracks that helped their artists sell tens of millions of albums and singles.
He has 17 multi-platinum and gold albums produced for Cash Money.
After that…
Mannie Fresh signed to Def Jam South.
Currently, he has two solo studio albums. His debut solo album, “The Mind of Mannie Fresh,” was released on December 24, 2004. Meanwhile, he released his second solo album, “Return of the Ballin,” on October 27, 2009.

He wasn’t particularly fascinated by music early on. When the time came for his interest to be piqued, his instruments were just lying there to be played. Good thing he didn’t throw them away!
I thought that was an amusing example of how some people could be “late bloomers.” Although I think it was the perfect time for him.
