Table of Contents
This article narrates the story of the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed actor we once knew who, for want of a nail, lost everything.
Let’s find out together as we journey into how Macaulay Culkin lost Hollywood’s favor.
Who Is Macaulay Carson Culkin?
Macaulay Carson Culkin is an American musician and actor hailing from New York City. Born on August 26, 1980, Macaulay was the third of seven children.
Macaulay and his big family grew up in a small New York apartment.
They were raised in a Catholic but abusive family. Before going to Professional Children’s School, Macaulay attended St. Joseph’s School of Yorkville for 5 years.
His mother, Patricia Brentrup, was a telephone operator while Christopher “Kit” Cornelius Culkin, his father, worked as a sacristan at a local Catholic Church.
However, his parents were never officially married.
Keep this in mind for later, though, as this may catch you off guard.
With Kit being a “frustrated” Broadway childhood actor back in the day, Macaulay began acting when he was just four years old to carry on what his Kit Culkin couldn’t.
Kit used to hype Macaulay up before doing a shoot or an interview with a beating or a threat.
“Do good, or I’ll hit you.”
Nice guy…
Culkin shot up to international stardom as he played the role of the young McCallister in the Christmas movie Home Alone.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York spun his career off the charts too.
Soon enough…
… he was labeled the most successful child actor and ranked 2nd on VH1’s list of the “100 Greatest Kid-Stars” as well as E!’s “50 Greatest Child Stars.”
Culkin was a sensational, internationally-recognized, and marketable commodity.
The blockbuster household tradition continues to this day.

Macaulay Culkin Controversies & Litigation
Culkin vs. Parents (2015)
Mac’s father prioritized cold hard cash. According to him, the family always needed more money.
He forced Mac to make many movies which, some people say, led to Mac’s depression and dependence on drugs.
The Home Alone star’s parents, who both claimed to be his managers at court, were at each other’s throats due to a custody dispute.
Feeling cheated over his money, the then-15-year-old Culkin sued them both, removing them as his legal guardians.
“After I did Richie Rich in ‘93 or ‘94, my father and mother called it quits, which is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I was able to walk away from the business. I was able to say, ‘I hope you made all your money because there’s no more coming from me,’” said Culkin.
Billy Breitner, the family’s accountant, was placed in charge of the kid’s $17-Million fortune and finances until he turned the legal age of 18.
Macaulay was eventually cut off from his parents and alienated to this day.
He was arrested on drug and weapons charges in 1996 after he was stopped by the police, who found an unloaded .357 Magnum and small amounts of heroin and cocaine in his car.
After several probation violations, he was sentenced to prison in 1999.
After missing court-ordered drug tests multiple times, he was sentenced to three-years in prison in 1999 but ended up serving just a year in a California Substance Abuse Facility and Prison, Corcoran.
In 2001, while on parole, Robert was seen barefoot, walking around Culver City, California, and arrested on suspicion of being under the influence.
That incident led to him being fired from his role on the TV show “Ally McBeal” in addition to other film and stage jobs. Instead of being sent back to prison, the now-broke actor was ordered in to rehab.
On the other hand…
… the actor has been granted an official pardon for a drug conviction that sent him to prison nearly 21 years ago.
A proclamation from Mr. Brown’s office says Downey Jr has “lived an honest and upright life, exhibited good moral character, and conducted himself as a law-abiding citizen”.
Culkin vs. Michael Jackson Controversy (2005)
Just as he sped up to stardom, Culkin became good friends with pop singer and legendary music icon Michael Jackson.
They were so close, Macaulay Culkin even appeared in Jackson’s 1991 “Black or White” music video.
In Jackson’s controversial child sexual abuse trial, Culkin testified.
He disclosed that he had slept in a bed with Jackson but nothing happened and the accusations towards Jackson were “absolutely ridiculous.”
“I never saw anything; he never did anything,” said Mac to Esquire magazine.
Culkin vs. Drug Charges (2004)
Culkin was arrested for 17.3-gram marijuana, 16.5-milligram Alprazolam, and 32-milligram Clonazepam possession in Oklahoma City on September 17, 2004.
For these controlled substances, Macaulay Culkin was briefly jailed and released on $4,000 bail.
He was then charged in court for drug misdemeanor offenses.
He pleaded not guilty at the October 15, 2004 trial. He later reversed the plea to guilty and earned himself three year-long suspended prison sentences with $540 in fees.
How Macaulay Culkin Spends His Money
At 15, Macaulay took a break from his acting career.
After his parents separated and his mother gaining custody of all her children, Mac’s finally back to his normal life away from the big screen.
As he turned 18 in 1998, Culkin had his major turning point. It meant he finally had full unguided access to his fortune.
“It allows me to treat everything like a hobby. I do nothing for my dinner nowadays,” says Mac.
As he had everything in his grasp, Culkin decided to get married!
He tied the knot with Rachel Miner in 1998, and the marriage became a lighthouse for paparazzi and speculations.
Sadly, the marriage was short-lived. It only lasted for 4 years and the two found themselves separating just two years into the marriage.
They were both too immature to handle a fully-functioning family, apparently.
You could even say this might be one of Culkin’s bad decisions that added to his spiraling downfall.
Soon after his divorce, he started dating Mila Kunis!
Woah, slow down, hot stuff!

New York Apartment
Mac lived in a 5,100-square-foot real estate worth $2 Million in 2013. The New York Apartment was converted into an art studio. The “playground workspace” condo was shared with his close friends Adam Green and Toby Goodshank.
Macaulay Culkin has lived in Paris for some time now since then.

On the other hand, news broke about how he and his current girlfriend, Brenda Song, are quietly looking to purchase a small house in LA.
The property boasts 5 beds and 6 baths rebuilt with wide plank oak hardwood floors. This property located in Studio City near Ventura Boulevard is a 3,400-square-foot modern farmhouse.
The couple slipped in to view the property costing about $3 Million sitting next door to “Empire” star Jussie Smollett’s property.
They have yet decided to take it, though.
These cuties are finally thinking about raising a family together.
