Peter Hook is an English musician who worked with Joy Division and New Order as a bassist and co-founder. In 1976, Hook and Bernard Sumner started the band that would become Joy Division. The band reunited as New Order after the death of lead singer Ian Curtis in 1980, and PeterHook played bass with them until 2007.

But hold just a second; there’s more…

Among his achievements are…

Peter Hook played bass but also served as keyboardist and lead vocalist on  two albums with Monaco, “Music for Pleasure,”  and “Monaco,”  one album with Revenge, “One True Passion,” and one album with Freebass “It’s a Beautiful Life.”

Before we go any further, let’s have a look at…

…at how one of the iconic bassist and well-known performers ascended through the ranks to achieve his dream.

Peter Hook was born Peter Woodhead in Broughton, Salford, England, on February 13, 1956. Like his bandmate Bernard Sumner, he adopted his stepfather’s surname, but unlike his pal, he kept it and even coined the nickname “Hooky” from it.

This is when things start to get interesting!

Bernard Sumner and Hook, childhood pals, went to a Sex Pistols gig at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall on June 4 and July 20, 1976. Hook borrowed £35 from his mother the next day to get his first bass guitar.

Since that time…

Sumner and Hook created a band with their buddy Terry Mason, who attended the gigs after being inspired by the performance.

Isn’t it astounding?

Here’s something to think about:

Its band, then known as Warsaw, made their debut at the Electric Circus on May 29, 1977, opening for Buzzcocks, Penetration, and John Cooper Clarke.

Ian Curtis, bassist Peter Hook, guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, and drummer Stephen Morris made up the band.

Apart from that…

On January 25, 1978, the band performed their first show as Joy Division at Pip’s Disco in Manchester.

Take note of the following:

While Joy Division’s early records were highly influenced by early punk, they quickly developed a sparse sound and manner that established them as one of the post-punk movement’s forerunners.

Curtis’s condition made it more difficult for him to perform as the band’s success grew; he occasionally had seizures on stage.

Yes! We know what you’re thinking.

Curtis had a failed marriage, depression, and epilepsy, among other personal issues and physical issues. At the age of 23, he committed suicide on the eve of the band’s first US/Canada tour in May 1980.

With that…

Closer,” Joy Division’s second and final album, was released two months later, and it topped the charts with the single “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”

The remaining members formed a new band called New Order. They were a hit for the next ten years, combining post-punk with electronic and dance music elements.

We’re not done yet!

While Joy Division’s fame dominated the band’s formative years, their exposure in the New York club scene in the early 1980s saw them progressively integrate dance rhythms and electronic equipment into their music.

With that…

They had a lot of success in the 1980s with albums like “Power, Corruption & Lies” (1983), “Technique” (1989), and the singles compilation “Substance” (1987).

They split up in 1993 to pursue other interests until reconciling in 1998.

As they reconcile…

New Order has gone through several hiatuses and personnel changes since then, the most notable of which was Hook’s exit in 2007. Music Complete, their tenth studio album, was released in 2015.

Hook was also a co-owner of Suite Sixteen recording studio, originally Cargo Studios, which he bought with Chris Hewitt in 1984.

In September 2009, a blue plaque was erected on the Kenion Street music building in Rochdale, which housed the studios. Peter Hook performed a special concert in Rochdale, with all revenues going to the Back Door Music Project, a Rochdale youth project for people who love music.

Cargo and Suite Sixteen in Kenion Street, Rochdale, were prominent studios on punk and post-punk music history.

Here’s a funny story:

Hook was a renowned DJ in the mid-2000s, but he was discovered to be playing pre-mixed CDs and just miming the motions of a DJ. He acknowledged he was merely faking to be a DJ on his Myspace blog, but he later withdrew it due to popular reaction.

Another side of the story…

Hook and the University of Central Lancashire created a unique new master’s degree program in Music Industry Management and Promotion in 2012. It allows students to study the music business at a postgraduate level while also gaining practical experience in the industry.

This is due to…

On July 11, 2012, Hook received an honorary fellowship from the same institution during the graduation of the university’s creative art students.

In addition to being a musician…

He is also a writer. Hook published three books, “The Hacienda: How Not to Run a Club,” “Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division,” and “Substance: Inside New Order,” between 2010 and 2016.

Now that we’re done on his professional career…

Let’s now take a look at his personal life.

Hook has two children with his first marriage, son Jack and daughter Heather, with Iris Bates. He married comedian Caroline Aherne in 1994, but the couple divorced in 1997. After Aherne’s death, he alleges that the marriage had been chaotic, abusive, and violent.

After that…

Peter subsequently married Rebecca Jones and had a daughter.

To sum it all…

In the music industry, Hook’s bass playing became legendary. Hook frequently employed the bass as the main instrument, producing high-string melodies with a distinctive strong chorus effect. He did this in New Order, leaving the basslines to keyboards or sequencers.
