Monica Samille Lewinsky, also known as Monica Lewinsky, is a public speaker, anti-bullying activist, fashion designer, author, and tv personality. She was a former intern in the White House in 1995.

As what she calls herself in her speech in “Forbes 30 Under 30” in 2014, the “patient zero-as the first person to have their reputation completely destroyed via internet,” Lewinsky’s started her career as a celebrity in rather an odd way.

And which is through a scandal, she’s been involved with the most powerful person in the mid-1990s, former President Bill Clinton.

In 1995, Lewinsky, who was twenty-two at that time, started her unpaid summer White House internship in the office of Chief of Staff Leon Panetta. November of that same year, she and then-President Bill Clinton started their sexual relationship, which mostly took place in the Oval Office where Lewinsky frequently made trips to deliver paperwork.

But because her superiors thought Monica was spending too much of her time around the president, she was transferred to Pentagon in April 1996.

Lewinsky worked in the Pentagon for ten months. She then met an older single man named Thomas and had a sexual affair with him. Monica became pregnant and had an abortion.

Being frustrated with President Clinton, Monica began to confide with Linda Tripp, her co-worker who previously worked in the White House. Tripp began secretly recording their conversations when she admitted that she had a relationship with the commander-in-chief in 1997.

January 1998, Lewinsky submitted an affidavit in the Paula Jones case, denying her relationship with Clinton. She tried to convince Linda to lie under oath. Still, instead, Tripp gave the recordings to Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, adding to the ongoing investigation of Clinton’s Whitewater real estate investments.

However…

Clinton denied her relationship with Lewinsky stating, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,” when the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke.

But Starr obtained the famous blue dress stained with Clinton’s semen and, together with Lewinksy’s testimony stating that she had nine sexual encounters with Clinton, resulted in the former president’s impeachment in December 1998.

And that’s just one side of the story…

In March 1999, Lewinsky cooperated with Andrew Morton in writing her biography, which included her side of the Clinton affair, “Monica’s Story.”

She was also interviewed by Barbara Walters on March 4, 1994, on ABC News “20/20” and watched by over 70 million Americans.

Lewinsky’s participation in the book gave her $500,000 and another $1 million from international rights from an interview with Barbara Walters.

And it’s just the beginning…

On May 8, 1999, Monica guest-starred on “Saturday Night Live,” appearing in two sketches.

She started doing tv commercials in the diet company for Jenny Craig Inc., requiring her to lose 40 pounds in six months in January 2000. Still, She ended the campaign in April that same year because the company faced controversy by choosing her as their spokesperson. 

Lewinsky was paid $300,000 of the $1million promised to her.

It gets better….

Monica launched her handbag line in September 1999, The Real Monica, Inc., and was sold online as well as at The Cross in London, Henri Bendel in New York, and Fred Segal in California.

In 2000, Monica appeared in “The Tom Green Show ” and hosted her own show “Monica’s Postcards” on Channel 5 in the UK, a mini TV series, where she travels around the USA giving an insight into various places to visit. 

As if that’s enough…

Lewinsky appeared on HBO’s “Monica Black and White” in 2002, which gave her the chance to tell her the side of the story and take questions from the audience.

She hosted a reality television show, “Mr. Personality,” aired on the Fox Television Network in 2003. And made guest appearances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “The View” and “V Graham Norton.”

However…

Monica moved to London and decided to leave the public spotlight in 2005, where she pursued a degree in Psychology at the London School of Economics.

But wait, there’s more…

She then returned in 2014, a decade after, and  wrote an essay called “Shame and Survival” for the Vanity Fair magazine and appeared in the National Geographic Channel “The Last Decade.”

A year later, Lewinsky joined the Bystander Revolution, an anti-bullying organization, and became an ambassador and strategic advisor. She spoke about bullying at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Lewinsky wrote the foreword to “Shame Nation: The Global Epidemic of Online Hate,” a book by Sue Scheff and Melissa Schorr, in 2017.

She discussed public shaming on “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” in 2019 and serves as a producer on the third season of Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” in 2020, which will focus on her infamous sexual affair, the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal.
