In 1979, The Boston Celtics selected Bird as the sixth overall pick during the year’s NBA Draft, but he didn’t sign with them right away. For his final season, he played for Indiana State and led the Sycamores to the National Collegiate Athletic Association title game.

The General Manager of Celtics, Red Auerbach, refused to pay Bird a cent more than any other player despite his proven skills. Bird threatened that he would just play out the 1979 season in the NCAA instead of signing with them.

But just before the team’s draft rights were about to expire, the Celtics signed Bird to a 5-year, $3.25M deal – making him the highest-paid rookie.
