Some time later, he rejoined Northwood University, a university he was enrolled in before Indiana.

The General Manager of Celtics, Red Auerbach, refused to pay Bird a cent more than any other player despite his proven skills. Bird threatened that he would just play out the 1979 season in the NCAA instead of signing with them.

But just before the team’s draft rights were about to expire, the Celtics signed Bird to a 5-year, $3.25M deal – making him the highest-paid rookie.

The Bird Collegiate Rule was born! From then on, according to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the rules have been changed. Teams are no longer allowed to draft any player who they won’t sign immediately. 

Bird played for the Boston Celtics in the 1979 – 1980 season. He immediately made his impact felt with a  32-win improvement versus the previous season.

For approximately 13 seasons, or his entire professional career, Bird played for the Celtics. Most of the time, he played forward with Kevin McHale and at center with Robert Parish.
