Michael Jeffrey Jordan is an American former professional basketball player and a businessman. He is currently the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and of 23XI Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Throughout his career, the basketball superstar played 15 seasons in the NBA, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls! Amazing, right? But before Michael became one of the most successful, popular, and wealthy basketball players of all time, it wasn’t always easy for this living legend.

You see..

Contrary to what people thought,  Jordan wasn’t cut from his high school team! He tried out for the varsity basketball team as a 5’11” sophomore and his friend Leroy Smith who was 6’7″ was chosen over him. This motivated him to work harder and after growing 4 inches more, Jordan had a breakout in his senior year which changed life!

Professional Basketball Career

The NBA Team Chicago Bulls were a losing team when they drafted Michael and fortunately, he was able to quickly turn this around. In his first very first season, he was honored as the league’s Rookie of the Year. He missed most of the following season due to a broken foot, but he had a glorious return when he led the NBA for seven consecutive seasons.

As if that’s not enough…

Michael became the second player after Wilt Chamberlain to score 3,000 points in a single season, he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) five times, and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1988. After leading the Bulls to their third consecutive championship, Jordan retired briefly and pursued a career in professional baseball.

Afterwards…

He returned to basketball in March 1995 and immediately afterwards, he led the Bulls to a 72–10 regular season record, the best in the history of the NBA at the time. Jordan led the Bulls three championships in a row, and each time Jordan was named MVP of the NBA finals. After the 1997–98 season, Jordan retired again.

Nike Deal And Annual Royalties

In 1984, the former professional athlete signed a five-year deal with Nike worth $500,000 annually for one of the most iconic athlete-endorsed brands of all time: the Jordan Brand. The very first pair of Nike shoes he wore was called Air Jordan I, which is the very first shoe in the Air Jordan shoe line of the brand. After he retired, he continued as an ambassador for Nike and had the Jordan Brand own apparel line. Jordan reportedly earns around $100 million from Nike royalties alone according to Business Insider.

Endorsements

Over nearly four decades, he earned billions for his endorsement deals with Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Wheaties, Chevrolet, Hanes, Gatorade and Upper Deck. Undoubtedly, Michael Jordan’s net worth rose with all these endorsement deals.
