Klay Alexander Thompson was born to former NBA basketball player Mychal Thompson and former college volleyball player Julie Thompson, on February 8, 1990, in Los Angeles.

The Thompson family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, when Klay was just two years old, where little Klay and his older brother Mychel and younger brother Tryce spent their childhoods. There, he also befriended Kevin Love, who would later become his Little League teammate and fellow NBA player.

Even at a young age, it’s already evident that Klay inherited his parents’ talent for sports…

During Klay’s teenage years, he and his family once again relocated to a different place, this time at the Ladera Ranch, California, where he attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School.

Playing for SMCHS, he was named to the All-Area second team and the Orange County third team during his junior year. He also led SMCHS to a 30-5 record and a Division III State Championship appearance as a result of averaging 21 points per game.

At the State Championship, he hit seven three-pointers in a game, setting a state finals record. As a result of his triumph, he was chosen as the League MVP, Division III State Player of the Year, first-team Best in the West, and to the EA Sports Second Team All American. He graduated from Santa Margarita Catholic High School in 2008.

Thompson continued his winning streak at Washington State University, where he started playing under Tony Bennett as a freshman. Averaging 12.5 points per game, he was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and Collegehoops.net All-Freshman Honorable Mention Team.

In his sophomore year, he competed at the Great Alaska Shootout Championship with his team, the Washington State Cougars, where he set multiple records, including being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and achieving the third-highest single-game point in the history of WSU, scoring an impressive 43 points in a single game.

On top of that…

He also became the third-fastest Cougar to reach 1000 points and thus was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team and was honored with a Pac-10 Player of the Week.

Finishing the season with an average of 19.6 points, Thompson has set WSU’s single-season scoring record with 733 points, making him the school’s third-leading scorer of all-time.

Professional basketball career

With the great promise Thompson has shown and his early basketball successes, it’s not surprising when he was chosen by the Golden State Warriors as their 11th overall pick when he declared for the 2011 NBA draft after his junior season.

Although the Warriors didn’t pick him for the NBA All-Star Weekend Rising Stars Challenge in 2012, Thompson nevertheless worked on improving many aspects of his game performance, such as points per game, shooting percentage, rebounds, steals, and turnovers. His hard work paid off when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First team.

The following year, aside from scoring 32 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers, he also teamed up with Stephen Curry, with coach Mark Jackson dubbing them as the NBA’s best shooting duo. Living up to their nickname, the “Splash Brothers,” the two hit a combined 483 three-pointers, the most ever by an NBA duo.

In 2014, Thompson signed a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, which extends his stay with the basketball team for the next four years. Subsequently, he set a career-best with 41 points in the Warriors’ 127-104 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

2015 saw Thompson set another career-high with 52 points and eleven three-pointers in a 126-101 win over the Sacramento Kings, as well as the Splash Brothers breaking their own previous record by scoring 525 three-pointers. The Warriors ended the season on a high note; the team won their first NBA championship title in 40 years after defeating the Cavaliers in six games.

The 2016-2017 season was historic for Thompson, as he became the first player in NBA history to score 60 points in less than 30 minutes of action, leading to a 142-106 win against the Indiana Pacers. He also achieved the feat of being the first Warrior to score 60 points in recent years, putting him right up there with the only Warriors to do so: NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, and Joe Fulks.

However…

Life is not always full of wins, not even for a star player like Klay Thompson.

The start of the 2018-2019 season didn’t start well for the shooting guard. In the first seven games, he failed to make multiple three-pointers and didn’t have a 20-point game. He recovered with several wins, though, and eventually got named to the NBA All-Defensive Team for the first time in his career, which makes perfect sense given his reputation for defense skills.

Unfortunately…

Thompson strained his left hamstring during the Game 2 of NBA Finals in 2019 and had to miss his first career playoff game for Game 3. Even though he was able to return for Game 4 and Game 5, Thompson suffered a torn ACL and had to exit the game halfway through the third quarter of Game 6.

As a result…

He underwent knee surgery that made him miss the whole 2019-2020 season. Understandably, he called 2019 probably the worst year of his life in a video conference.

Despite this…

He re-signed with the Warriors for $190 million in the same year. In 2021, while preparing for his return for that year’s season, he tore his right Achilles tendon, which once again made him miss the season.

Aside from being one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Klay Thompson was also a part of the gold medal-winning US team at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2016, as well as at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Klay Thompson is a brand ambassador for many brands as well, including Gillette, Body Armour, Waiakea Water, NERF, Bevel, Anta Sports Products, Panini America, Electronic Arts, and most notably the Chinese shoe company Anta, with whom the famous basketball player has an $80 million contract with.

In 2017, he donated $1000 for every point he scored in home games against the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, and Washington Wizards as part of local efforts to raise money for Northern California wildfires relief.
