John Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He grew up in the nearby town of Fairfield with Jewish and Christian roots.
Turns out…
John’s interest in music began after watching Michael Fox’s guitar performance in Back to the Future. Not long after, his father rented the 13-year old Mayer a guitar. His interest in blues music began after listening to a Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette tape given by a neighbor. He loved listening to blues music so much that he listened to Otis Rush, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. From there, he started taking lessons from a local guitar shop owner, Al Ferrante.
However, his religious parents started to become concerned…
Because he was obsessed with music, his parents took him twice to see a psychiatrist. To make things worse, his parent’s rocky relationship spurred Mayer to “disappear and create my world I could believe in.” He started singing publicly as a talented solo artist and a band member of Villanova Junction in local venues and pubs while in high school.
There’s more to this story:
When he was 17, Mayer was diagnosed with cardiac dysrhythmia and was hospitalized for a week. His silver lining was that on his first night confined in the hospital, he wrote his first lyrics:
“That was the moment the songwriter in me was born.”
John Mayer High School
In his junior year in high school, Mayer went to the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School (then the Center for Japanese Studies Abroad). The school was where he learned about the Japanese language and culture.
John Mayer University
Though Mayer thought of skipping university altogether, his parents insisted that he pursue his education.
In 1997, at 19 years old, he enrolled in Berklee College in Boston with a partial scholarship. Mayer shared that he became frustrated by the emphasis on technical skill rather than creativity. Before finishing his second semester, he left for Atlanta with his friend Clay Cook to find their spot in the music business.
