School Coach

After suffering a second knee injury, John was devastated but still had a passion for football. And although he could not play, he had the chance to coach.

In 1960 he coached at Allan Hancock College as an assistant and became head coach two years later. A year later, he was hired as a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State University, where he stayed until 1966.

NFL Coaching Career

John Madden joined the Oakland Raiders football team as a linebackers coach in 1967. In his first season, the team reached Super Bowl III.

The following season, Madden was promoted to head coach after the former resigned. At 32, this made him the youngest football head coach on a professional level.

With Madden as head coach, the Oakland Raiders reached five AFC title games but lost them. Eventually, the Raiders went on to win their first Super Bowl coached by John Madden in a 92-14 win against the Minnesota Vikings.

Madden retired with the most wins in Raider’s history.

Television Career

John Madden teamed up with Pat Summerall in the CBS networks football broadcasting. He would team with other sportscasters such as Vin Scully and Verne Lundquist during this tenure.

He would work as a duo with Summerall at CBS for five years. Madden became a free agent when Fox Network gained broadcasting rights in 1994. At the time, Madden was offered more than $2 million a year from different sports networks, including NBC, Fox, and ABC.

The Madden and Summerall duo continued over at Fox Network, and rumors suggested Fox paid Madden more than any NFL player’s annual salary. But, the NFL contract was too hefty for Fox, and due to this, they tried to cut the expenses in programs. John Madden left Fox Network in 2002.

This leads us to…

John Madden then joined ABC Network Monday Night Football as a sportscaster. During this time, ABC was paying Madden a $5 million annual salary for three years.

In 2005, Madden joined the NBC Sports network as a commentator for Sunday Night NFL games. He would go on to appear in 476 consecutive weekends as a broadcaster. In 2009 Madden retired at Super Bowl XLII.

John Madden Philanthropy

The football and sports broadcasting legend is keen on supporting causes that have a lot to do with his passion.

John Madden established an outreach program to cover the transportation costs of youth groups. He learned that transportation expenses prevent the school groups from visiting the Hall of Fame and immediately make it possible.

Madden has also recently donated his original Madden Cruiser Greyhound bus to the Pro Hall of Fame. The high-end bus features state-of-the-art technology with televisions, built-in vacuum cleaners, a queen-sized bed, microwave oven, and even a private bedroom and kitchenette to complete.
