Isn’t that one heck of a ride? Up next – we’re going to take a peek at how American evangelist Jimmy Swaggart spends his hard-earned doe. But before that, let’s check out his career and earnings so far, as well as his sexual scandals involving prostitutes.

Jimmy Swaggart Scandals & Controversies

1991 Scandal

A police officer pulled over Swaggart for driving on the wrong side of the road in Indio, California, on October 11, 1991.

Swaggart was found in the company of a prostitute for the second time in his professional life.

Inside the vehicle with Jimmy was a woman named Rosemary Garcia. According to her, Jimmy had stopped to propose sex to her on the side of the road.

But…

Instead of admitting his weakness as a man, Jimmy told those at Family Worship Center, “The Lord told me it’s flat none of your business.”

Now, that’s what I call swag!

Donnie Swaggart announced to the audience that his father would be stepping down temporarily as head of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries for “a time of healing and counseling.”

Marvin Gorman Feud

In 1986, Swaggart exposed Marvin Gorman, fellow Assemblies of God minister, to having several affairs. Once he was exposed, Marvin’s ministry all but ended. He was defrocked from the Assemblies of God,

Gorman retaliated by filing a successful lawsuit against Swaggart for conspiracy to ruin his reputation and defamation, which led to the award of damages amounting to $10 million in 1991.

The parties settled out of court for the amount of $1.75 million.

Prostitution scandal of 1988

American Pentecostal Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart was implicated in a sex scandal involving a prostitute in 1988.

In 1987, after his exposition of Gorman, Marvin sought the help of his son Randy and son-in-law Garland Bilbo to watch the Travel Inn on Airline Highway to establish that the Inn was being used for prostitution.

The two staked out one of the Inn’s rooms and once the two got some photos of Swaggart entering the Inn with a prostitute, Randy and Garland contacted Marvin Gorman, whose church was located nearby.

Marvin confronted Swaggart about his sexual misconduct once he arrived at the scene.

But…

Marvin offered to remain silent if Jimmy would state publicly that he lied about Marvin Gorman’s affairs.

He waited for almost a year to no avail, so Marvin hand-delivered a note to Swaggart informing him his time was up;

And…

On February 16, 1988, Gorman gave the photos to the presbytery leadership of the AG.

On February 21, 1988, Swaggart gave his “I have sinned” speech on live television without giving any details regarding his transgressions.

The AG hierarchy in LA initially suspended Swaggart for three months, but the national presbytery extended the suspension to the standard two-year suspension for sexual immorality.

The hierarchy of the Assemblies of God defrocked him, believing that Jimmy was not genuinely repentant in submitting to their authority.

The Assemblies of God removed Swaggart’s rights to exercise the functions associated with being a spiritual leader by removing his credentials and ministerial license.
