It’s impossible to avoid the name Jordan if you’re a car race fan.

Eddie Jordan has been a steady legendary figure from the 1970s and beyond, making a name by winning competitions, snagging stellar deals, and later on, championing young talents in the car racing industry.

He’s also a well-known businessman who doesn’t let a good business opportunity pass him by.

Even people who don’t know much about the car racing industry are impressed by his inspiring leadership and work ethic.

Read on to see how he exactly manages to build such great net worth and what he’s up to these days.

Edmund Patrick Jordan was set on the path of priesthood or dentistry before working as a banker.

That’s right. Even the man considers himself a hobby collector of some sort.

To start it out, Eddie took an accountancy course for six weeks and then went straight to Mullingar to work for the Bank of Ireland as a clerk.

Eddie Jordan was a self-proclaimed “villain,” after having been in confrontation with the banks he had worked with because he’s determined to “do anything for money.”

Once, Eddie had about four or 5 cars for sale at the parking lot of the bank. He’s working in the car loan section of the bank then and he’d wait for clients who were planning to buy a car and would then urge them to buy his cars instead rather than going to the nearby garage.

What’s worse (or better?)…

…was Eddie had the cars parked in the bank managers’ parking slots!

What a villain, indeed.

Eddie worked at the Bank of Ireland in Mullingar for about four years before moving to another branch in Camden Street, Dublin.

Then his fate was sealed in 1970…

…when a banking strike happened in Dublin.

As a result, Eddie Jordan went to spend the summer on the island of Jersey. He soon found work there in an electrical company as an accountant by day and bar staff in the evenings.

Now here’s the kicker.

This was the time when he learned how to kart race. Soon, Eddie Jordan was competing in unofficial races at St. Brelade’s Bay.

The future boss returned to Dublin, bitten by the kart racing bug, and soon bought his very own kart.

Eddie Jordan’s car racing career began to take off when he won the Irish Kart Championship in 1971.

He wasted no time and soon moved up with Formula Ford for the Irish Formula Ford Championship in 1974 and then to Formula Three in 1973.

Eddie Jordan was the new young champion on the block. But it’s never rainbows and butterflies.

In 1976, Eddie was forced to sit it out after an injury he got from a crash at Mallory Park. Eddie’s leg was shattered.

But then, Eddie Jordan came back with a bang.

After recovering from his injuries, EJ switched to Formula Atlantic and eventually won three races in 1977 alone.

The next year, Eddie Jordan won the Irish Formula Atlantic Championship, further contributing to Eddie Jordan net worth and making him more popular.

This also helped him seal a long-term contract with Marlboro, opening doors for more racing opportunities for Eddie.

And as if that’s not enough…

…in 1979, Jordan competed in the British Formula Three with Swedish racer Stefan Johansson bearing the name “Team Ireland.”

That very same year, EJ raced in Formula Two and was even able to do testing for a McLaren Formula 1 car.

Eddie Jordan also drove in the World Sports Car Championship using a Porsche and a Pink Floyd BMW.

Now, after injuries and failed deals…

…Eddie decided to take it a level up and establish his very own team, the Eddie Jordan Racing

Without enough funds at times, the team was barely able to afford an engineer for their cars. As a result, Eddie Jordan, the boss himself, had to stand as the team’s engineer most of the time.

He became more popular as the lively, colorful, and opinionated motorsport team boss who led Eddie Jordan’s team with great ambitions to young talents he wanted to see succeed.

Later on…

…in an interview, Eddie Jordan shared that he soon found that car racers are “full of crap” and fragile. He went on to say that he had to psychologically trick them at times to make his drivers move.

Remembering one instance with one of his drivers Jean Alesi, Eddie shared:

“And I’d always dive into the cockpit, put my head around the guy in the middle of Formula 3 qualifying and I remember Jean Alesi during the French Grand Prix, I said ‘look, I’ve just put another half-inch on the roll bar…you will absolutely crunch it.

I did absolutely nothing, never changed a thing, and he went half a second quicker and I’m trying to say: ‘what’s the matter with these guys?’ They’re just headbangers. All they need is their head stroking.”

For the former Formula Ford driver, it’s always “mind over matter” in trying to get his team to move better.

The Eddie Jordan Racing team had drivers David Leslie, James Weaver, Martin Brundle, and David Sears.

In 1987…

…Eddie Jordan’s team got the British racing driver Johnny Herbert who later won them the British Formula Three Championship.

Soon enough, Jordan was fast becoming known as the successful mentor of many new drivers who owe their big breaks to him.

Some of them who have driven Jordan cars and won Grand Prix include Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Ayton Senna, Johnny Herbert, Nigel Mansell, Eddie Irvine, John Watson, Jean Alesi, Thierry Boutsen, and Roberto Moreno among many other prominent names.

He welcomed another decade when Jordan founded the Jordan Grand Prix in 1991.

Through this, Jordan gave Michael Schumacher his Formula One debut.

The Belgian Grand Prix saw Jordan Grand Prix all-time high when the drivers Damon Hill finished first and Ralf Schumacher finished second.

Unfortunately…

…the team lost a Honda partnership deal in 2002 and that started their financial struggles.

The Midland Group bought the Jordan Grand Prix in 2005 and renamed it MF1 Racing.

The next year, it was sold again this time to the Dutch company Spyker Cars, renaming the team as Spyker F1.

In 2008, it was then sold once more and became Force India.

But that’s not all.

Eddie Jordan wasn’t actually defeated at all, because, through all that, Jordan developed a good business portfolio of different interests and soon entered the television scene.

In 2009, Eddie Jordan returned to the F1 scene, not as a driver nor a charismatic team boss but a lead analyst for BBC’s Grand Prix coverage with Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard.

Aside from that…

…he also began writing for a column in F1 Racing Magazine titled This Much I Know.

Contributing more to Eddie Jordan net worth, he also worked as a television personality on a series named Eddie Jordan’s Bad Boy Racers.

In 2016, it was announced that Eddie was to be one of the presenters for the British motoring magazine Top Gear as well as a lead analyst for Channel 4’s C4F1.

But did you know?

This charismatic motorsport team boss is also a musician! Yep, you’ve read that right!

Apparently, Eddie also dabbled in music and actually had his own band named V10 where he played the drums.

Today, his band is known as Eddie & The Robbers and is still very much alive and gigging around the world.

So how successful is this Irish Kart Championship winner after all?

Though a college dropout, Eddie has two honorary doctorates coming from the University of Ulster as well as the Dublin Institute of Technology.

The James Joyce Award given by the Literary and Historical Society of the University College Dublin and a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage of the University Philosophical Society of Trinity College is just a few of his awards for his contribution to the motorsport industry in Ireland, as well as his charity works.

And it gets better.

In 2012, Eddie Jordan was awarded an honorary Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for the same reasons.
