Kandi Burruss is an American singer and songwriter from the 90’s group Xscape turned television actress in the reality TV show Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Xscape

Xscape is a 90’s all-female R&B group with members: Kandi Burruss, Tamika Scott, LaTocha Scott, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and Tamera Coggins.

While attending Tri-Cities performing arts high school…

…Tamika Scott met KB, and together with Tamika’s sister, LaTocha Scott, the three began singing together. 

The trio recruited a fourth member, Tamera Coggins, then Tameka “Tiny” Cottle was asked to audition. 

The vocal group Xscape was officially formed in 1992, the group that kick-started Kandi Burruss net worth. The following year Tamera Coggins left the group, and Xscape became a quartet.

…in 1992, after their performance on BET’s Teen Summit, Xscape was discovered by Jermaine Dupri, who signed them to his So So Def label. The group released their debut album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha in 1993, which spawned two of their biggest hits, “Understanding” and “Just Kickin’ It.” 

The album peaked at seventeen on the Billboard 200 and number three on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, becoming certified Platinum on February 1, 1994.

Xscape released their second album  Off the Hook on July 14, 1995 and was certified Platinum that November. 

Their third and final album, Traces of My Lipstick, was released on May 12, 1998. The album was certified Platinum by June 21, 1999.

The group parted ways in 1998 as LaTocha Scott left the group to pursue a solo career and released her own album.

Solo Career

KB or Kan focused on production and songwriting after Xscape disbanded. In 1999, together with Tamika Tiny Harris and Kevin ‘She’kspere’ Briggs wrote the number one hit “No Scrubs“ for the girl group TLC.

…in the same year, KB and Kanye West, Kelly Rowland, and Kevin ‘She’kspere’ Briggs wrote the song “Bills, Bills, Bills” for Destiny’s Child.

The song Bills, Bills, Bills was nominated as the  Best R&B Song in the 2000 Grammy Award. But the song No Scrubs grabbed the Grammy award for Best R&B Song that year.

KB went to become a successful songwriter. 

And it got better.

KB won the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers’ Songwriter of the Year award in 2000 and was the first African American woman to win the prestigious award.

Since then, KB has written songs for well-known singer and singers in the music industry. 

She has written songs for music business giants like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, TLC, and Destiny’s Child, just to name a few.

On October 29, 2009, KB released her debut EP, the Fly Above EP, and on September 19, 2000, Kandi released her first solo album, “Hey Kandi…” with “Don’t Think I’m Not” as the carrier single. 

Hey, Kandi debuted at 72 on the Billboard 200 and 32 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Her second album, Kandi Koated, was released on December 14, 2010.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta

In March 2009, Burruss replaced DeShawn Snow in the second season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. 

She instantly became a fan favorite for her love-hate relationship with another cast member Porsha Williams. 

Kandi became a mainstay on the reality show that’s already on its 13th season.
