Early Life: Stephen Ray Perry, also known as Steve Ray Perry was born on January 22, 1949, in Hanford, California, United States. 

Moreover, Steve Perry was born and raised by his Portuguese parents and became interested in music at a very young age as a result of his father’s career as a vocalist and musician.

When he was eight years old, Steve had to be relocated to a farm as a result of his parent’s divorce. 

He was 12 years old when he first heard Sam Cooke sing “Cupid“, the hit song on the radio, and right then and there, knew he wanted to be a musician. 

Steve Perry went to high school in Lemoore, California when he was a teenager. He became very familiar with music throughout his high school years.

Channeling his musician passion…

With his fellow students, he entered the marching band and a host of other bands from outside the school. Perry went to the College of the Sequoias after finishing high school and sang in the choir as a tenor.

Steve Perry’s Early Musical Career

Steve Perry began taking his music career seriously in his early twenties when he paired up with 16-year-old Scott Mathews, an aspiring music producer. 

Stephen Ray Perry performed the majority of the tracks, whereas Mathews played the drums and guitar. The band, which they named Ice, seemed to be on the rise.

However…

They couldn’t find management or a handler and no one’s ever heard their recordings, despite the fact that they produced a lot of them. 

Steve Perry tried once again to bust through when he formed Pieces, a progressive rock band.

Yet, after all the effort…

The band was unable to snag a vital recording contract once more. 

But Perry didn’t give up, and then in his mid-twenties, he entered the band Alien Project. Only when the band’s bassist was killed in a car accident, Perry saw it as a hint that maybe he should stop making music and relocate to his family home in Lemoore.

Band Journey, The Voice, Rolling Stone

Between the mid-1980s as well as the mid-1990s, Perry enjoyed a successful solo career, managed to make occasional appearances in the 2000s, and decided to return to singing full-time in 2018.

Perry’s singing voice has been praised by influential musical colleagues and the media, earning him the nickname “The Voice,” which was coined by Jon Bon Jovi. 

Perry was honored into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of his band Journey on April 7, 2017, and also was ranked number 76 on Rolling Stone “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.”

Perry was the lead vocal for nine of Journey’s albums: Infinity (1978), Evolution (1979), Departure (1980), Dream, After Dream (1980,a Japanese film theme song), Captured (1980, a live album), Escape (1981, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart), Frontiers(1983), Raised on Radio(1986), and Trial By Fire (1996).

Escape’s hit song “Open Arms“ became their greatest success, successfully peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks.
