You might think that someone with a career in law would have a fairly clean record as they work looking into people’s morals and pursuing justice.

Nancy Grace’s life is a reminder that everyone is human, though.

Here are some of the controversies she was involved in.

Suicides Linked to Nancy Grace

In 2011, Toni Annette Medrano accidentally killed her 3-week old son while sleeping on the couch with him. According to her, she consumed almost an entire fifth of vodka the night before her son died.

In June 2012, Medrano was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, but Grace said that the charges weren’t harsh enough and wanted murder charges.

A month after that

Medrano set herself on fire on July 2 and died on July 7.

Medrano’s husband said that he felt that what Grace said and did during her segment while covering the case was cruel.

But that wasn’t the only suicide case related to Grace.

In September 2006, 22-year old Melinda Duckett shot herself after Grace interviewed her about the disappearance of Duckett’s 2-year old son, Trenton.

During the interview, Grace aggressively questioned her regarding her whereabouts with Trenton before he went missing. She also questioned Duckett’s inability to answer the question of whether she had taken a lie detector test or not.

Her suicide happened before the interview, but CNN still aired it, so the company received criticisms.

Nancy Grace was firm on her stand.

She said that she’d suggest that it was guilt that drove Duckett to commit suicide.

While she sympathized with the family, she also said that she didn’t think their show was to blame for the incident. She added, “The truth is not always nice or polite or easy to go down. Sometimes it’s harsh, and it hurts.”

The case isn’t over.

In November 2006, the fact that there was pending litigation against CNN and Nancy Grace.

The Duckett estate asserted a wrongful death claim, alleging that Grace’s questioning manner drove Duckett to suicide. The Duckett estate’s attorney also argued that CNN airing the interview traumatized her family.

On November 8, 2010, Grace settled the lawsuit.

Embellished Story on Her Ex-fiance’s Murder

After her “Objection!” book was published, the New York Observer accused her of embellishing the story of the 1979 murder and trial of her ex-fiance.

The New York Observer researched Griffin’s murder and found out that some parts she wrote in her book contradict what happened.

There was a time when Nancy Grace was still working as a prosecutor that the Supreme Court of Georgia reprimanded her for withholding evidence and making improper statements. She did those in a 1997 arson and murder case of which the court overturned the conviction.

The court deemed Grace’s behavior as “disregard of the notions of due process and fairness” and found it inexcusable.
