In Britain, a great deal of what looks like royal wealth belongs to the Crown as an institution. The Crown Estate, the Royal Collection, the occupied palaces: the sovereign has the use of them and cannot sell them. Hand over the throne and you hand over the assets with it.

The Nassau-Weilburg fortune does not work that way. It is held privately by the family, built up over centuries of investments, property and inheritance, and it is Henri’s in the ordinary legal sense that a house you own is yours. Guillaume inherited a job. His father kept the portfolio.

A Financial Centre Helps

Luxembourg’s size makes the figure look stranger than it is.

The grand duchy has spent decades as one of Europe’s principal financial centres, with a fund management industry out of all proportion to its population. A family fortune that was already substantial, sitting in a jurisdiction built around the productive management of capital, had unusually good conditions in which to compound.

The holdings themselves are not publicly itemised. What is documented is property in Luxembourg and abroad, private investment vehicles, and collections of art and heirlooms that are family property rather than state property.

The Handover

Henri gave notice of his intentions in October 2024, appointing Guillaume as lieutenant-representative, a constitutional halfway house that lets an heir take on the working duties of head of state before the title passes.

The abdication itself followed a year later, ending a reign that began in October 2000. At 70, he stepped back in reasonable health and on his own timetable, which in the recent history of European monarchy is the exception rather than the rule.

He remains, by every published estimate, the richest royal in Europe. He simply is not a reigning one.
