Goggins graduated from BUD/S training with Class 235 in 2001 following three attempts and had been appointed to SEAL Team 5.

Goggins tried to join the Badwater Ultramarathon as a fundraiser but had been informed by the organizing committee that he needed to compete in another ultramarathon first because the Badwater is an invitational race.
