The Most Expensive Sneakers Ever Sold at Auction

Page Updated
On This Page

Ask what the most expensive sneakers ever sold are and you will get four different answers, all of them true, because four different questions are being answered and almost nobody says which one they mean.

The four records

A single wearable pair at public auction: $2,238,000. Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 13 in the “Bred” colourway, worn in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals, sold at Sotheby’s on 11 April 2023. This is the correct answer to the question as most people intend it.

A collection lot: $8,032,800. The Dynasty Collection at Sotheby’s, 2 February 2024. Six shoes, one from each championship-clinching Finals game of Jordan’s career.

A private sale: $1,800,000. Kanye West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototypes from the 2008 Grammys, brokered by Sotheby’s to the investment platform RARES in April 2021. No bidding, no public sale, no auction.

A single shoe: no figure exists. This is the one that surprises people.

The Dynasty Collection was six individual shoes, not six pairs. One left foot, from the Air Jordan 6, and five rights. They sold as one indivisible lot, so no per-shoe price was ever established. Dividing $8,032,800 by six gives $1.34m, and that number is arithmetic rather than a result. It should not be published as a record, and it regularly is.

Longer lists exist. They rest on a single aggregator with no house, no date and no lot number, and that same aggregator misfiles the Yeezy private sale as an auction result, so its unsourced entries are not worth carrying here.

The number that should worry buyers

Rows four and nine are the same shoes.

Jordan’s 1984 Nike Air Ships, worn in his fifth NBA game, sold at Sotheby’s in October 2021 for $1,472,000. They were the first sneakers ever to pass a million dollars at auction and the story ran everywhere.

In September 2023, at Goldin, they sold again for $624,000.

That is a fall of 57% in under two years, on the most famous pair of sneakers in the market, during a period when the headline record for the category was rising. I have not found a single competing page that mentions it.

There is a plausible reason for the gap, and it sits in the paperwork. The Air Ships carry a letter of provenance and a MEARS “letter of opinion in regards to game use”. An opinion letter is a professional judgement. It is not the same instrument as a photo-match, where an authenticator compares scuffs, creasing and stitching against footage of the game itself.

Compare the lots that have held up. The Air Jordan 13 at $2.24m was photo-matched by The MeiGray Group and described as the only photo-matched pair from that game. The Shattered Backboard Air Jordan 1 carries both a MeiGray photo-match and physical glass from the Trieste backboard embedded in the left outsole. The Flu Game 12s carry MeiGray, Sports Investors Authentication, JSA and a letter from the ball boy Jordan gave them to.

The pair with the weakest documentation is the pair that lost more than half its value. That may be coincidence. It is the only data point the market has given us, and it points one way.

Four corrections worth making

The Yeezy is not an auction record. It was a private treaty sale and it is ranked as an auction result on most sneaker sites, including specialist publications that ought to know. Any list placing it third among auction sales is wrong at the top of its own table.

The Dynasty Collection was not six pairs. It was six single shoes. Some pages say six pairs, one says eight sneakers. Sotheby’s catalogue is clear: one left, five rights.

The Dynasty Collection sold in 2024, not 2025. The confusion is understandable, because Sotheby’s first shopped it as a private sale in early 2023 with an estimate reported up to $100 million before routing it to auction instead.

The Kobe 8 Achilles shoes made $660,000, not $600,000. Sotheby’s, Yahoo Sports and cllct all give the higher figure. The rounded one circulates on aggregators.

What I think this market actually is

Eleven of the twelve verified entries above are Michael Jordan, and the twelfth is a pair of unworn 1972 running shoes that sold as a design artefact.

That is not a sneaker market. It is a Michael Jordan market wearing a sneaker market’s clothes, and its prices are being set by a small number of collectors bidding on the biography rather than the object. Kobe Bryant’s record, at $660,000, is a quarter of Jordan’s for a comparably significant game.

The Air Ships resale is the only moment where the market has been asked the same question twice, and it gave two answers $848,000 apart. My read is that these prices are far more fragile than the headlines suggest, and that the difference between a photo-match and a letter of opinion is where the fragility lives.

One thing to watch. A pair matching the Shattered Backboard description, glass in the left outsole and all, was offered again at Sotheby’s in December 2025 with an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000, against the $615,000 Christie’s took in 2020. The lot page is no longer live and no result was published, so I cannot tell you what happened. If it is the same pair, and it sold anywhere near the low estimate, that would be the second trophy lot in three years to come back to market and disappoint.

🏆 Top Takeaways to Success

  1. 1

There is no single answer to "most expensive sneakers". A pair, a single shoe, a collection lot and a private sale are four different records, and lists mix them freely.

  2. 2

The $1.8m Nike Air Yeezy was a private treaty sale, not an auction. It is ranked as an auction record almost everywhere, including by sneaker publications.

  3. 3

The Dynasty Collection was six individual shoes, not six pairs. One left foot and five rights.

  4. 4

The 1984 Air Ships lost 57% of their value between 2021 and 2023. It is the only documented case of a record sneaker being resold, and nobody reports it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most expensive sneakers ever sold at auction?+

For a single wearable pair, Michael Jordan's Air Jordan 13 "Bred" from Game 2 of the 1998 Finals, at $2,238,000 (Sotheby's, 11 April 2023). A larger figure, $8,032,800, is often quoted, but that was a lot of six individual shoes sold together rather than a pair.

What was the Dynasty Collection?+

Six single game-worn Air Jordans, one from each of Michael Jordan's six championship-clinching Finals games: models 6, 7, 8, 11, 12 and 14. One left foot and five rights, each autographed. They sold as a single indivisible lot for $8,032,800 at Sotheby's on 2 February 2024. Because the lot was never split, no per-shoe price was ever established.

Did Kanye West's Nike Air Yeezy sneakers sell at auction?+

No. The 2008 Grammys Air Yeezy 1 prototypes sold for $1.8 million in a private sale brokered by Sotheby's in April 2021, to the investment platform RARES. It appears in auction rankings on most sneaker sites, including specialist ones, and it does not belong there.

Do expensive sneakers hold their value?+

There is one documented test and the answer was no. Jordan's 1984 Nike Air Ships set a record at $1,472,000 in October 2021, then resold at Goldin in September 2023 for $624,000, a fall of 57% in under two years.

How are game-worn sneakers authenticated?+

By photo-matching, usually through The MeiGray Group, which compares wear patterns, scuffs and stitching against game footage and photographs. The strongest lots carry a photo-match; weaker ones carry only a letter of provenance or an opinion letter, which is a materially lower standard.
