Maha Vajiralongkorn: The Pilot Who Waited 44 Years for a Throne

Maha Vajiralongkorn was made crown prince of Thailand in 1972, when he was nineteen. He became king in October 2016, at sixty-four.

Forty-four years is an extraordinary apprenticeship. Charles III waited seventy years and the length of it became a defining fact about him. Vajiralongkorn’s wait was shorter and arguably harder, because he spent it in the shadow of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for seventy years and was revered in Thailand to a degree that has few modern parallels.

The Military Years

What he did with the wait was fly.

Vajiralongkorn served as an officer in the Royal Thai Army and trained abroad, with British, Australian and American forces. He qualified as a fast-jet and combat pilot, and later held commercial pilot certification as well. Royal aviation credentials are often ceremonial. His are not.

The training in Australia mattered beyond the flying. It gave a Thai heir an extended period outside the palace system, in a country with no deference to Thai royalty, at an age when most crown princes are being managed rather than tested.

Succeeding an Institution

Bhumibol died on 13 October 2016 after seventy years on the throne. Thailand entered a mourning period of a year.

Vajiralongkorn acceded but did not immediately take the ceremonial steps, and the formal coronation waited until 4 to 6 May 2019, a three-day sequence of Buddhist and Brahmanical rites that had not been performed since 1950. Days before it, on 1 May, he married Suthida, a former Thai Airways flight attendant who had joined his personal guard unit and been appointed a deputy commander in 2014. She became queen consort.

The sequencing was not accidental. A coronation with a queen consort present is a different statement from one without.

What Cannot Be Written Here

Any honest account of this life has to name its own limits.

Thailand’s lèse-majesté law makes insulting the monarchy a criminal offence carrying years in prison, and it has been enforced against journalists, academics and ordinary citizens. A great deal of what is discussed about Vajiralongkorn outside Thailand cannot safely be published inside it, and much of what circulates abroad is unverifiable.

So this biography stays with what is documented: the dates, the military record, the succession, the coronation. On the personal life and the political controversies, the sourcing available to an outside publication is not strong enough to justify assertions, and the accuracy standard here is that omission beats invention.
