Korey Wise attended a local high school in New York. He was just 16 years old when he got involved in the Central Park Jogger Case. He was the oldest among the Central Park Five, making him the only boy to stay in the adult prison. Sadly, the incident prevented him from pursuing college.

On April 19, 1989, the crime took place in the North Woods of Manhattan’s Central Park, New York City. Korey was not a suspect at first. He just accompanied his friend Yusef Salaam to the police station for support. Unfortunately, he was questioned, too, just like the other four boys.

Since Korey was already 16 at that time, he got interrogated without the presence of his parents or guardians. He stayed at various facilities like Rikers Island. Later on, he got a sentence ranging from five to 15 years in adult prison. It got worse because Korey ended up serving 12 years.

While in prison, he met Matias Reyes, a convicted murder and serial rapist and serving a life sentence, confessed as the actual perpetrator. DNA tests confirmed that he was behind the sexual abuse of Trisha Meili.

And the good news…

Finally, the Central Park Five, composed of Korey, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, and Yusef Salaam, were acquitted after Matias’ confession. The five of them sued New York City for prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress. In 2014, New York State in the New York Court of Claims paid them $41million.

Korey Wise received a hefty amount of $12.2million from the total settlement given to The Central Park Five.
