Matthew Abram Groening is American cartoonist, voice actor, author, comedian, writer, television producer, film producer, and animator from Portland, Oregon, United States.

Matt Groening’s Russian Mennonite father, Homer Philip Groening was once an advertiser, a filmmaker, a writer, and a cartoonist, and his Norwegian American mother, Margaret Ruth, used to be a teacher.

Matt’s grandfather, Abraham Groening, used to be a professor at Tabor College, a liberal arts college in Hillsboro, Kansas and he moved to Albany College (now called Lewis and Clark College) in Oregon in 1930.

Matt Groening created the comic strip “Life in Hell” (1980-2012) and the iconic animated series “The Simpsons” (1989-present), “Futurama” (1999-2003, 2008-2013), and “Disenchantment” (2018-present).

In 1977, Matt Groening moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of twenty-three to be a writer.

He had different jobs when he got there including being an extra in the movie “When Every Day Was the Fourth of July,”  he worked in a nursing home, he did landscaping in a sewage treatment plant, he worked in a restaurant, being a clerk at Hollywood Licorice Pizza record store, chauffeuring and ghostwriting for a retired Western director. He described that experience as “a series of lousy jobs”.

“Life in Hell” (1977-2012)

Matt Groening shared to his friends how life in Los Angeles is through his self-published comic book “Life in Hell”.

He handed out copies of the comic book in the book corner of a record store where he worked before. In 1978, Matt had his first professional cartoon sale to the avant-garde Wet magazine in which the comic strip “Forbidden Words” appeared in its September/October 1978 issue.

Life in Hell became a big hit instantly like in a blink of an eye. Matt Groening’s then-girlfriend, Deborah Caplan, published “Love is Hell” in November 1984 which is a book form of series of relationship-themed “Life in Hell” strips and followed by “Work is Hell” which was also published by her.

The final strip of the comic strip “Life in Hell” was published on June 16, 2012.

“The Simpsons” (1989-present)

“The Simpsons” is a story of an ordinary family who are living in a fictional town of Springfield.

Homer Simpson is the father of the family. He is married to his wife, Marge Homer, and they have three children together named Bart Homer, Lisa Homer, and Maggie Homer.

“The Simpsons” characters first gained attention and became popular on “The Tracey Ullman Show”.

The series has 32 seasons and 706 episodes in total. Its final episode aired on the 23rd of May 2021 which was the Season 32 Episode 22 titled “The Last Barfighter”.

This series is the longest-running primetime sitcom in the United States and the longest-running program on FOX.

Matt Groening created “The Simpsons” and James L. Brooks was its executive producer.

“Futurama” (1993-2003, 2008-2013)

In 1997, Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, the writer and producer of “The Simpsons”, developed an animated series about life in the year 3000, called “Futurama”.

In an interview in 1998, Matt Groening said that trying to get “Futurama” on air was by far the worst experience of his grown-up life.

“Futurama” aired its first episode titled “Space Pilot 3000” on March 28, 1999.

The show was cancelled by Fox after airing for four years.

But because of how strong its DVD sales and stable ratings were on Adult Swim, “Futurama” had its comeback.

“Futurama” was renewed and produced four straight-to-DVD films – Bender’s Big Score (2007), The Beast with a Billion Backs (2008), Bender’s Game (2008) and Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009).

On the 4th of September 2013, the last episode of “Futurama” was aired.

“Disenchantment” (2018-present)

“Disenchantment” is an adult animated sitcom Matt Groening made for Netflix.

It is a story of the 19-year old alcoholic Queen of Dreamland named Queen Tiabeanie Mariabeanie de la Rochambeaux Grunkwitz or Bean.

Bean’s parents are King Zeg and Queen Dagmar. She has a younger half-brother named Prince Derek.

Bean has a drinking problem and is always accompanied by her friend elf named Elfo and a personal demon named Luci.

It has two seasons and thirty episodes in total. The first ten episodes were released on August 17, 2018, and released ten more episodes on September 20, 2019.

Netflix renewed the American TV Series for twenty more episodes in October 2018 and ten of those were released on January 15, 2021. The release date for the ten more remaining episodes will be announced soon.

Because of his production, and creativity, he has been nominated for more than 40 Emmy Awards, won a total of 13 of them, and he now achieved success and is living an incredible fortune.
