Matt Groening shared to his friends how life in Los Angeles is through his self-published comic book “Life in Hell”.
He handed out copies of the comic book in the book corner of a record store where he worked before. In 1978, Matt had his first professional cartoon sale to the avant-garde Wet magazine in which the comic strip “Forbidden Words” appeared in its September/October 1978 issue.
Life in Hell became a big hit instantly like in a blink of an eye. Matt Groening’s then-girlfriend, Deborah Caplan, published “Love is Hell” in November 1984 which is a book form of series of relationship-themed “Life in Hell” strips and followed by “Work is Hell” which was also published by her.

Matt Groening grew up in Portland, Oregon, USA, and attended Ainsworth Elementary School and Lincoln High School.
He remembered having to write “I must be quiet in class” 500 times at least once in school and had his teachers tear his doodles up.
