The members of Insane Clown Posse, Bruce, and Utsler became friends when they were young. The two would always hang out in Southwest Detroit until, eventually, they decided to move there. 

Both had difficult lives growing up, and one thing they also had in common was that their fathers both left their families when they were young. 

I guess you can say that they are brothers not in blood but in bond…

Bruce and Utsler had their first encounter in Oak Park. They met in the place known as an exurbia on the northern boundary of Detroit, Michigan. 

Their teenage lives were filled with parties – drinking alcohol, smoking weed, and getting in trouble. Bruce also revealed that his father left them with no money to their names and that their stepfather sexually abused them.

The two dropped out of school after moving to Detroit and have thought of becoming professional wrestlers. 

They have wrestled together with Joseph’s brother John Utsler and their friend named Lacy. They made their own rings in their backyards. 

And a little fun fact…

Insane Clown Posse loved listening to hip-hop music. They loved listening to musical artists, including Beastie Boys and 3rd Bass. 

In 1989, they released a single titled Party at the Top of the Hill as the JJ Boys. Joseph Bruce went as Jagged Joe, John Utsler as Master J, and Joseph Utsler as Kangol Joe. 

But they didn’t really take it seriously then…

The group failed and didn’t pursue their music career, and Joseph Bruce had to leave and move in with  Rudy “The Rude Boy” Hill due to poverty. He moved to a city near the industrial southwest side of Detroit, River Rouge. 

The sense of belonging led Bruce to form a gang they called Inner City Posse, and they formed the members out of the connections they’ve made in River Rogue. 

And then a turn of events occurred…

Between 1989-1990, Joseph Bruce was detained for 90 days due to robbery, violating probations, and sending death threats. 

After this, he decided to turn over a new leaf. He didn’t want to be involved in any more gang-related crimes, so he opted for professional wrestling. 

On his first show, he met two other first-timers, Rob Van Dam and Sabu. Bruce brought along Utsler, and the four became good buddies. But then Bruce has grown tired of the politics of the industry and decided to switch careers.

Here is where it gets better…

The group of Bruce, Utsler and his brother John went back to performing hip hop music at local nightclubs. They performed as Inner City Posse and went by stage names 2 Dope, Violent J, and John Kickjazz. 

Later that year, they self-produced an EP titled Dog Beats. But their music was refused to be played on-air by local radio stations because of the fact that they’re white. 

Due to financial problems that also surfaced, the group decided to change their genre from gangsta rap to horrorcore.

They agreed to go with the chosen genre and use horror-themed lyrics. They used their music as a way to let out all the emotional rage bottled up inside them due to their negative life experiences. 

And the rest was history…
