Jerry O’Neil Lawler, popularly known as Jerry “The King” Lawler, is a professional wrestler and color commentator from the United States. Jerry also works for the Memphis Wrestling Promotion as a commentator and wrestler.

Jerry is a three-time WCWA World Heavyweight Champion and one-time AWA World Heavyweight Champion who joined WWE’s legends program.

But hold just a second. There is much more…

Among his achievements include…

Lawler has won multiple titles, including the American Wrestling Association Southern Heavyweight Champion, the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion, and the World Heavyweight Champion.

This is where it gets interesting!

Did you know he won the United States Wrestling Association’s Unified World Heavyweight Championship twenty-eight times?

Yes, indeed! You got it right!

With this in mind…

He was given the honor of being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

However, before we go any farther…

…let’s take a look at how one of the world’s well-known commentators ascended through the ladders to achieve his ambition.

The color commentator was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 29, 1949, to Hazel Lawler and Jerome Lawler. His father was sent to a Ford Company assembly facility in Lorain, Ohio, where he was raised.

Have you ever thought about how he got his start in the industry?

Lawler’s artistic abilities drew the interest of local wrestling promoter Aubrey Griffith while he was working as a DJ jockey in Memphis.

From that point forward…

Lawler agreed to give Griffith free publicity in exchange for free wrestling training, and the two established a deal.

Isn’t it incredible?

And then…

Lawler made his professional wrestling debut in 1970, and in September 1971, he won his first championship by winning a battle royal. With partner Jim White, he won the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship under the management of Sam Bass.

Around the turn of the 80s…

He was a part of the United States Wrestling Association and continued to compete until 1997. In 1977, he debuted in the Continental Wrestling Association.

Following that…

In 1992, Lawler began his career as a superstar announcer in the WWF game, which he honed.

During that time…

His feuds with Bret Hart and Doink the Clown were also well-known.

The wrestler made appearances on the independent circuit before returning to the WWF as a part-time wrestler and commentator.

But have you ever wondered why his fortune is so modest despite his popularity compared to other wrestlers?

On September 12, 2012, while Kane and Daniel Bryan wrestled against Titus O’Neil and Darren Young at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Lawler legitimately fell at the commentator’s table, not long after defeating CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler in a tag-team bout with Randy Orton. He was given CPR and began breathing on his own. He was, however, clinically dead for about 30 minutes.

Lawler had a heart attack, which was later confirmed on WWE.com. An angioplasty was performed on him.

Six years later…

Lawler had a stroke on March 21, 2018, at his Memphis home. On his podcast, he detailed the experience, revealing that he could not talk for three days. He remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) until he regained his speech three days later.

But that didn’t stop him…

Because wrestling is his passion, he returned shortly after the incident and resumed his feud with Punk.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) unveiled a new commentary crew for Raw on September 26, 2019, as part of their “WWE Premiere Week.” Beginning on September 30, 2019, Raw, Lawler would return to full-time commentary as an analyst alongside Vic Joseph and Dio Maddin.

Outside wrestling…

Jerry Lawler has dabbled in a variety of other endeavors. He recorded a handful of musical singles in the late 1970s and has continued to make music on a sporadic basis over the years.

Other than that…

He also had his chat program, “The Jerry Lawler Show,” on WMC-TV in Memphis in the 1980s and produced a CD titled “Memphis’ Other King.”

Other than that…

In addition to wrestling, the former professional wrestler has dabbled in politics. Lawler ran for mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, in 2000. However, he was defeated in his bid for mayor, as Mayor Willie Herenton was handily re-elected.

We haven’t finished yet…

Are you aware that…

Lawler has also lent his voice to several WWE video games in which he serves as a commentator. Lawler also works as a commercial artist, creating graphics for various businesses, including WWE. He painted the cover of the wrestling comic book “Headlocked” in 2007.

Taking the other side of the tale into account…

Lawler has three wives and two sons from his first marriage to Kay. On July 29, 2018, his son Brian, who wrestled in the WWF/E under “Brian Christopher” and “Grandmaster Sexay,” committed suicide.

Kevin Lawler, his second son, has worked as a referee and wrestler in professional wrestling under “Kevin Christian” and “Freddie Gilbert.”

After divorcing Kay, Lawler married Paula from February 14, 1982, to October 2, 1991.

That wasn’t the end of it…

On July 23, 1989, he met his third wife, Stacy “The Kat” Carter, at a charity softball game in Memphis, Tennessee. They tied the knot in September of 2000. On October 15, 2003, their divorce was completed.

In terms of controversies, Lawler is also involved…

In late 1993, Lawler was charged with statutory rape and adultery of a 15-year-old girl in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The allegations were ultimately withdrawn after the accused victim confirmed no sexual abuse. Following that, Lawler went back to work for the World Wrestling Federation.

Not only that…

Brian Lawler, Lawler’s son, was found hanged in the Hardeman County Jail on July 29, 2018, and died later. Lawler filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hardeman County, Hardeman County Sheriff John Doolen, and others on the first anniversary of his death, alleging that they failed to protect him.

To sum up…

As a commentator, Jerry Lawler has had a wildly successful wrestling career. Since he was a child, he has been involved in wrestling, and he has a long history of winning championships.

His distinct movements and methods have motivated aspiring wrestlers to be like him. He is one of the highest-paid wrestlers and commentators globally, which significantly increases his wealth.
