Dwight David Yoakam was born in a coal-mining community in Pikeville, Kentucky, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. During his high school years in Northland High School in Columbus, he was already very much involved in music and acting.

He was cast in various theater productions and played guitar in local garage bands.

But let me tell you…

To pursue a career in music, he had dropped out of Ohio State University then moved to Nashville, Tennessee. It was to no avail, though, because Nashville was into urban cowboy music back then, so his hip honky-tonk music wasn’t received well.

That didn’t stop Dwight from going after his dream, though.

He moved to Los Angeles, California, where he got to play in punk and rock clubs with The Blasters, Los Lobos, and X.

Eventually, Dwight Yoakam released a debut studio album “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc.” It turned into a full-length album – “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.” – when he signed a contract under Warner Bros subsidiary Reprise Records.

His first two record hit singles were “Honky Tonk Man” – his cover of Johnny Horton’s song – and “Guitars, Cadillacs.” After those, he’s had multiple pieces that charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.

Country Music Award

With Dwight Yoakam’s impressive talent, he won various awards and nominations throughout his career.

He first won the Academy of Country Music Award for Top New Male Vocalist in 1986. He also won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance for his song “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” in 1994 and the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for the song “Same Old Train” in 1999.

Not only that…

To date, Dwight Yoakam has recorded more than 20 albums, and among them, his album “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.” was certified double platinum while his 1993 album “This Time” was triple platinum!

All in all, he has twelve gold albums and nine platinum albums. Very impressive!

Now, if you think you finally know enough about him, hold up because there’s more yet to come on Dwight Yoakam.

Dwight also dipped his toe in the acting industry as his music career was sailing. He first acted in the movie Red Rock West (1992) and then received roles in various television and movie shows.

Some of his notable shows are Sling Blade (1996), The Newton Boys (1998), Panic Room (2002), Wedding Crashers (2005), and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005).

He also tried his hand at being a film director and writer for South of Heaven, West of Hell (2001).

Bakersfield Biscuits By Dwight Yoakam

David Yoakam’s brand – the Bakersfield Biscuits – was established in the early 2000s and successfully produced easy-to-eat food.

According to their website, he founded it with a certain “Biscuit Boy” born in 1952. They met in a music store, then with some amusing twist of fate, Dwight learned about Biscuit Boy’s special biscuit recipe, which they then prepared for Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace nightclub opening.

It all just started because Dwight was looking for biscuits that don’t use refined sweeteners, and the rest is history! With Modern Foods as their distributor, their products are available in many retail stores such as WalMart.

Looking at Dwight’s formative years, his stature isn’t the only thing growing – his skills and talents, too! When his father David Yoakam returned from serving in the Army, he went back with a black-and-white Kay guitar.

Soon after…

Dwight experienced both music and drama during his years in Woodward Park Junior High and Northland High School – through his drama club. His first lead role was Charlie in Flowers for Algernon.

After high school, he studied at Ohio State University briefly, but his great passion for music led him to drop out after being deceived by a con man who promised him country music stage tours.

It gets better…

Once he moved to California, his music career started taking off as people gradually grew out of urban cowboy music and turned to country music. Eventually, this landed him a major recording artist contract.

Dwight Yoakam Lawsuit vs Warner

This February 8, Dwight Yoakam filed suit against Warner Music Group in the California Federal Court, claiming that Warner refused and ignored his demands to give back his rights to his debut album songs.

Dwight’s legal team’s argument hinges on the Copyright Act of 1976 where it dictates that an artist has rights to regain his copyright 35 years after the work’s release.

However, Warner argues that his claim is “premature and late” as the law says the request should have been made within a statutory period, but Dwight was five days late, according to them. As a result, they claim that he is ineligible to regain his rights until 2030. Accordingly, they moved the motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

Dwight Yoakam Philanthropy

In 2018, he partnered with Worldwide Music Ventures to raise awareness and funds for Guitars for Vets Canada. This non-profit program aims to use the healing power of music to help veterans and still-serving members with PTSD or other service-related disabilities.

He also once held a concert at the Hollywood Palladium for a Widows, Orphans, and Disabled Firefighters Fund.
