Famous for his iconic portrayal of the Black Panther king, Chadwick Aaron Boseman has warmed the hearts of superhero lovers worldwide.

It all started when…

The Drama League Directing Fellowship and AUDELCO recognized Boseman for his writing, acting, and directing talents in the theater.

He had won these awards for his work with George C. Wolfe’s The Colored Museum and Ron Milner’s Urban Transitions.’

During this time, he was also a drama instructor at Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

‘Deep Azure,’ a play he had written, earned him a Jeff Award nomination. He worked with the Hip-Hop Theater movement and had his play ‘Hieroglyphic Graffiti’ produced in the National Black Theater Festival in 2001.

During his time in the theater, he was cast as “Romeo” inRomeo and JulietandMalcolm in Macbeth.’ Both were staged with the National Shakespeare Company of New York.

Chadwick as “Romeo”? Can we run that again, please…

Then this happened…

Michael Greene picked up ‘Deep Azure’ after Boseman turned it into a screenplay. Because of that, he moved to LA, then Greene became his agent.

Boseman landed minor television series roles starting in 2003.

Then in 2008, he was cast as a regular in Lincoln Heights and Persons Unknownin 2010. He’s been through other TV shows after that.

His big-screen break was his portrayal of the titular role of 42: The Jackie Robinson Story in 2013. Then in 2016, he gave life to King T’Challa or Black Panther in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’

This is where the action started…

Marvel Cinematic Universe

After that first impactful appearance, Black Panther was released in 2018.

He earned $2 million from it, which was more than what Chris Evans and other popular Marvel actors made from their first MCU movies.

Then he appeared again in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game.’ The latter being the highest-grossing movie of 2018. Second to that was Black Panther.

He mainly received praises from critics for that performance.

But…

Boseman said that he could relate more to the movie’s villain, “Killmonger,” because he was severed from his African roots.

Chadwick wasn’t just an actor but also a representation of African-American society. He’s shown it by portraying “King T’Challa” in all the MCU movies he’s starred in. He fought for the African accent to be used by the “Wakandan” characters.

Moreover…

You can tell by the lead roles that he’s played in his career. Namely, “Jackie Robinson” of ‘42’ and “Thurgood Marshall” in ‘Marshall,’ and “James Brown” inGet On Up,’ and “Floyd Little” in The Express: The Ernie Davis Story.’

They’re admirable Black pioneers – like who Boseman has become.

Even before that, he was already making his mark.

He was reportedly fired from All My Children.’ He complained about how the writers gave his character a stereotypical Black background.

He was then replaced by Michael B. Jordan, who later became his nemesis in Black Panther.’

Small world after all, right?

After MCU…

Boseman starred in ‘Da 5 Bloods’ in 2019 and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ in 2020. Those two films earned him a lot of praise from critics.

He was also set to play ‘Yasuke,’ the only non-Asian samurai who was also the first Black man to set foot in Japan. The plan was that he would co-produce the movie too.

But then he passed away…

Chadwick Aaron Boseman died on August 28, 2020, at age 43.

He was at the peak of his career, and there was still a lot happening around him.

But unbeknownst to the world, the American actor was battling colon cancer since 2016. Meaning, he was under treatment the whole time that he was filming the most iconic movies of his career.

But his journey didn’t end when the colon cancer had overtaken.

He received much acclaim from his last performances, including nominations from Golden Globe Awards, British Academy Award, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

So his legacy lives on…

Chadwick Aaron Boseman was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on November 29, 1976.

He was a very active child. He trained in martial arts in his early life and dreamed of becoming an architect.

But things didn’t go according to plan – fortunately…

T. L. Hanna High School

Chadwick went to T. L. Hanna High School and graduated in 1995.

He wrote and staged his first play, ‘Crossroads,’ during his junior year. It was based on a classmate who was shot dead.

He was on the basketball and debate teams and even competed in the Original Oratory National Tournament in 1995. He took home 8th place.

Howard University

A basketball scout noticed Boseman and tried to recruit him, but he chose to go to Howard University in Washington, D. C.

During his college years, he worked at a black bookstore near campus, where he got the inspiration for writing another one of his plays, ‘Hieroglyphic Graffiti.’

Then in 2000, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in directing.

And there’s more…

British American Drama Academy

One of his mentors, Phylicia Rashad, was friends with Denzel Washington – yup, the famous actor-slash-amazing-person.

They raised funding for Boseman and other students to go to the British American Drama Academy for their summer program.

There, Boseman learned to love the works of William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett, and Harold Pinter. He also wanted to understand actors more, so he began to study acting.

But Chadwick wasn’t done…

He went to Africa with his professor, Mike Malone, and Boseman claimed it was one of the most significant experiences of his life.

Then, Boseman graduated from the Digital Film Academy in New York City upon returning to the US.
