Anthony Joshua Biography: Working Backwards From Riyadh

July 2026: On the Canvas Twice Inside Three Minutes

Kristian Prenga caught Joshua with a right hand in the opening seconds and put him down. Then he did it again before the first round ended. A 36-year-old former two-time heavyweight champion, seven months out of a fatal car crash, flat on his back twice in front of a Riyadh crowd that had bought tickets to a formality.

Joshua got up both times and knocked Prenga out at 2:43 of the second round. Record now 34-4, and the Tyson Fury fight that British boxing has been failing to make for a decade finally has a reason to exist.

Ninety seconds. It told you most of what there is to know about him: breakable in ways heavyweight champions are not supposed to be, and unusually hard to actually finish.

December 2025: Ten Days Apart

On 19 December 2025 he fought Jake Paul at the Kaseya Center in Miami, live on Netflix, 19,600 in the building. He dropped Paul twice in the fifth and knocked him out in the sixth. Paul went to hospital with a broken jaw. It was a spectacle rather than a contest and Joshua treated it exactly that way.

On 29 December 2025, in Ogun State, Nigeria, the car he was travelling in struck a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both members of his team, were killed. Joshua was taken to hospital with minor injuries and kept in for observation. The driver was subsequently charged over the crash. Joshua did not fight for the next seven months.

2024: Ngannou Flattened, Dubois Unanswered

March 2024, Riyadh Season: he knocked out former UFC champion Francis Ngannou inside two rounds. Best he had looked in years, and the sport briefly believed he had solved himself.

September 2024, Wembley, IBF title on the line: Daniel Dubois dropped him repeatedly and stopped him in the fifth. Fourth defeat, and at the time it read like the end of him as a serious heavyweight.

2021 to 2022: The Usyk Problem

Twice he fought a former cruiserweight giving away close to three stone, and twice he lost.

Oleksandr Usyk outboxed him over twelve rounds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September 2021, taking three world titles. In the August 2022 rematch in Jeddah, Joshua fought better and lost a split decision, then took the microphone and delivered a rambling, visibly distressed speech that got more coverage than the fight itself.

What those two nights exposed was not a courage problem or a conditioning problem. Joshua’s method depended on physical advantages, and against a better technician the advantages ran out.

2019: The Worst Night, Then the Best Six Months

1 June 2019, Madison Square Garden, American debut, heavy favourite. Andy Ruiz Jr., a late replacement, dropped him four times and stopped him in the seventh. Still one of the largest upsets in heavyweight history.

The response is the underrated part of his whole career. He rebuilt his body downward, took the rematch in Diriyah in December 2019, and refused to engage: jab, move, take no risks, win wide, reclaim three titles from a man who had put him on the floor four times half a year earlier. Unglamorous. Widely criticised. Completely correct.

April 2017: Wembley, 90,000, Klitschko

The peak. Joshua was knocked down in the sixth by Wladimir Klitschko, got up, and stopped the 41-year-old former long-reigning champion in the eleventh in front of 90,000 people. It unified titles and turned a British prospect into a global attraction.

He had won his first world title only a year before that, stopping Charles Martin in two rounds in April 2016 for the IBF belt, in his sixteenth professional fight.

August 2012: Gold on Countback

Joshua won super-heavyweight gold at the London Olympics, and the detail that usually gets sanded off is how. He was three points down going into the final round against the defending champion, Roberto Cammarelle of Italy, hauled it back to 18-18, and took gold on countback. Cammarelle has said publicly that he cannot understand how the decision went against him and believes the home crowd influenced the judges.

Amateur record 40-3, ABA titles in 2010 and 2011. One of those three losses was to Dillian Whyte in 2009, who put him down before winning the decision. Whyte was later banned from the amateur code once it emerged he had been a professional kickboxer. Joshua stopped him in the seventh round at the O2 in December 2015.

The five-year thing is the number to hold onto. Almost every elite heavyweight has been in a gym since childhood. Joshua walked into Finchley ABC in Barnet in 2007, aged eighteen, because his cousin Ben Ileyemi took him there, and was Olympic champion by 2012. He turned professional on 5 October 2013.

Before Any of It: Watford, Nigeria, a Trowel, a Tag

Born in Watford on 15 October 1989 to British Nigerian parents of Yoruba descent. Part of his childhood was spent at boarding school in Nigeria; he came back to England at twelve. Good athlete, poor student, laid bricks on building sites, and by his early twenties he was in trouble.

In 2009 he spent two weeks on remand at Reading Prison, then served a period under house arrest wearing an electronic tag. In March 2011 he was pulled over for speeding in Colindale, north London, with eight ounces of cannabis in the car. He was charged with intent to supply a Class B drug, pleaded guilty, was suspended from the GB Boxing squad, and received a 12-month community order plus 100 hours of community service.

Sixteen months later he was an Olympic champion.

What I Actually Think of Him

Joshua gets judged against a standard nobody agreed to. Because he arrived with a gold medal, a physique out of a comic book, and an endorsement portfolio before he had a title, the expectation was inevitability. Four defeats later, the consensus is that he underachieved.

I don’t buy it. The honest read is that Joshua was a very good heavyweight, never a great one, who repeatedly fought people he did not have to fight and got found out in public when it went wrong. Usyk is an all-time great. Dubois on that night was a nightmare for anyone. Ruiz was a genuine disaster, and he corrected it inside six months, which is more than most.

What is genuinely admirable, and separate from the boxing, is how plainly he has talked about the remand and the community order. That history usually gets laundered into folklore, or quietly dropped once the sponsors arrive. He kept describing it, in a way that cost him nothing to stop doing.

Read forwards, this looks like a rise. Read backwards, which is how he lived it, it is a man who has been knocked down in public more often than any British heavyweight of his stature, and who has so far always got back up.
