Robert Lawrence Stine was born to Ann Feinstein and Lewis Stine. He grew up in Bexley, Ohio, with younger siblings Bill and Pam.

When he was nine…

Stine found an old typewriter in their attic. Inspired by Max Shulman’s ‘Barefoot Boy With Cheek,’ he started writing joke books.

When he went to Ohio State University, he was a writer and editor for The Sundial – the school’s humor magazine.

He then moved to New York City to be a short story writer.

As a children’s literature writer, he was known as Jovial Bob Stine. He wrote humor books and created the humor magazine Bananas. He reaped its success with his colleagues Suzanne Lord, Bryan Hendrix, Jane Samuels, and others.

Stine’s first horror novel was Blind Date,’ released in 1986. Since he wrote more horror themes after that, he dropped the name Jovial Bob Stine.

Then in 1989-1995, Stine became the co-creator and head writer of ‘Eureeka’s Castle,’ a Nickelodeon Network children’s television program.

Meanwhile…

Stine wrote Fear Street’ ‘Goosebumps,’ and some humorous science fiction books.

It wasn’t until 1992 when ‘Goosebumps’ was launched under the private publishing company Parachute Press. And only three years later, the ‘Goosebumps’ TV series was born.

But that’s not all…

Aside from horror and comedy books for young readers, the author began publishing novels for adults in 1995. The first one was Superstitious,’ followed by ‘The Sitter,’ ‘Eye Candy,’ and ‘Red Rain.’

Stine went to publish more series. The best-known ones are ‘Mostly Ghostly,’ ‘The Nightmare Room,’ ‘Beach House,’ and ‘Rotten School.’

As a screenwriter and television producer…

… Stine is a very successful one too.

The Haunting Hour Volume One: Don’t Think About It’ was released as a direct-to-DVD movie in 2007. By popular demand, they made a spin-off series out of it.

Then two ‘Goosebumps’ movies followed. A fictionalized Stine was included in the plot, played by Jack Black. Stine himself made a cameo as a teacher named Mr. Black.

And in 2021, Netflix released the ‘Fear Street’ trilogy.

For his exceptional talents…

… Stine received much recognition. And we’re talking beyond America’s best-selling author in 1990-1993, according to USA Today.

The couple’s only child, Matthew Stine, is a music producer who owns a record label.

In one of his interviews, he named Stephen King as one of his favorite writers. Stine said that he had stolen one of King’s plots five times!
