You’d be surprised to know this, but Porter Robinson’s early music was influenced by his love for Japanese culture, music, games, and animes.

As a matter of fact…

…the future Virtual Self artist started producing at the tender age of 12!

Using Sony ACID Pro, he emulated the sounds of video gaming music such as Dance Dance Revolution and Beatmania. Porter Robinson was completely self-taught with no formal training and soon, he’s posting his own music on online forums and other sites.

His first alias was Ekowraith and through these forums, he also met future fellow DJs and producers who he’d collaborate with, such as Madeon who went by the name Daemon then.

In addition to this…

…Ekowraith also went by the names Audiomission, Bloodsphere, and Antigon Moore.

But as Ekowraith, he released music that was high-energy electronic.

In 2008, at 15 years old, Robinson released the single Booming Track, hoping to grow a music career in the dance music industry. And finally…

…as more people came to know Ekowraith, he was able to penetrate mainstream music in 2010 after releasing several original pieces of music through Big Fish Recordings and Glamara Records.

After Porter’s endless experimentations, he coined the term “complextro” with which he described his current music that’s composed of classically inspired sounds with “complex” textures, fills, and rhythms.

The perfect representation of Porter’s complextro sound is the single Say My Name which also turned out to be his biggest track at that moment, too.

Say My Name topped Beatport’s Electro House charts, giving Porter Robinson his first achievement as a solo musician.

And he was just 18 then.

And it just gets better.

This led to him being noticed by the famous dubstep producer Skrillex. In 2011, he signed a one EP deal with OWSLA, which was the huge producer’s new label.

Spitfire topped Beatport’s overall chart as well as iTunes dance chart, sending his newly launched music career into international success and recognition.

Aside from this, he also started being commissioned to make remixes for big names such as Avicii and Lady Gaga.

Porter Robinson’s turning point came in 2012.

It came with the single called Language. With this track, Porter surprisingly departed from his signature complextro sound in favor of a more melodic sound with a dream-like piano lead.

Language was included in the soundtrack of the 2012 video game Forza Horizon.

But did you know?

Porter Robinson also co-wrote the hit song Clarity by the famous DJ Zedd. It was supposed to be released as a collaboration but Porter withdrew his name because, at that time, he didn’t want to release a pop track “trying to do something that wasn’t shooting for the radio.”

At the end of 2012, the track Easy was released as a collaboration with the British producer and DJ Mat Zo. An accompanying animated music video was also soon released.

Now, here’s the kicker.

In 2014, Porter Robinson released his debut album called Worlds and it would change the course of the entire dance music genre.

Tired of the usual commercial EDM sound that was dominating the industry then, Porter made Worlds by focusing on different melodies to evoke a sense of nostalgia and dreaminess to the listeners with a goal of making EDM more human and approachable.

And he actually succeeded.

He also collaborated with vocal artists such as Lemaitre, Urban Cone, Breanne Duren, and Amy Millan. But he also contributed his vocals for the first time through the single Sad Machine. He also used the Vocaloid software voice Avanna for it.

What’s cooler?

The Worlds tour headlined the biggest and most popular music festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, and Coachella. Porter Robinson also released a Worlds remix album.

His Worlds live tour consisted of alternate realities and the multi-dimensional visual universe that soon got him the award for Best Live Act title at DJ Mag’s 2017 Best of North America Awards.

That same year…

…Porter and his lifelong friend and fellow producer Madeon released the track Shelter. The feel-good single reflects their friendship and connection. They also embarked on a Shelter tour.

If you think he’s done shocking and surprising, Porter Robinson then began producing music under the alias Virtual Self, which also turned out to be the title of his EP.

The single Eon Break was released first, followed by the now-famous Ghost Voices with an accompanying music video.

Ghost Voices gave Robinson his first-ever Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2019.

Aside from this…

…Porter Robinson also launched the Multiverse Music Festival, later renamed to Second Sky Music Festival, which features Porter’s self-curated lineup of his most loved performers and musicians.

In 2021, Porter Robinson released the album Nurture, with which singles such as Get Your Wish and Something Comforting were already released in 2020.

Personal Life

Porter was born on July 15, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia, and lives in Chapel Hill in North Carolina.

Porter is the second out of four boys in his family. His older brother is the video producer Nick Robinson.

After his younger brother, Mark Robinson beat cancer, Porter started the Robinson Malawi Fund in 2019 and donated a part of his earnings from the Second Sky Music Festival.

But that’s not all.

Porter also revealed that he didn’t produce any music in 2015 at all because he’s suffering from depression. His album Nurture came after this episode with the hope of channeling gratitude, hope, and mindfulness to his listeners.
