Cheech and Chong

Richard Anthony Marin, or most commonly known as Cheech Marin, was a Los Angeles native but was living in Canada when he met his would-be lifetime professional partner Tommy Chong back in the swinging 1968.

Did you know?

The iconic Cheech and Chong actually met in a strip bar!

Yes, you’ve read that right.

American Cheech was quietly carving a peaceful life in the countryside of Alberta in Canada until he took a sideline being a journalist for Poppin, a music magazine.

According to the American actor, the publisher told him to find a particular man he knew and sent Tommy Chong, a Chinese-Canadian musician who was running his parents’ club, to meet him.

That’s where the two legends met.

They met at Tommy Chong’s parents’ topless bar, which was actually illegal that time but passed the laws under the cover of being a “music appreciation society.”

Tommy has been a big fan of improv, or live theatre and he introduced Cheech Marin to the art as they hit it off.

Soon, it became their main connection and in the future, shared occupation as well.

As a matter of fact…

…Tommy soon built a comedy troupe which they called “City Works.”

He soon invited Cheech to the troupe to work with them on musical and comedic performances.

This set the duo’s career for the future years to come.

But it gets better.

The audience response to the funny and creative duo was so overwhelming that it caused Cheech and Chong to think about their future outside of the troupe.

And soon enough, the duo decided that it’s time to go on their own ways and grow their own career aside from being a part of the troupe.

With Tommy Chong, Cheech Marin set his sights on making it big back in the US.

The pair soon went back to the States with their base in California, as it’s warmer there and it’s where Cheech grew up.

Now here’s the kicker.

One of the reasons why Cheech had been living in Canada was because he was avoiding a draft to the Vietnam War.

So him going back to the States might mean jail time.

So Cheech had the bright idea to pose as a journalist, armed with an ID borrowed from a friend.

Interestingly…

…just when they’re about to go through security, the band Led Zeppelin arrived, and the duo tailed the group, which made his journalist story look real.

Seriously!

Cheech Marin settled in Los Angeles, California with Tommy and they soon got in contact with producer Lou Adler.

The two started working on comedy tracks in an old L.A. studio that was once Charlie Chaplin’s studio, as well.

Their single Dave’s Not Here’ was a success and helped establish them in the comedic scene.

They went on to make more hits including songs and comedy albums such as Basketball Jones, Earache My Eye, Sister Mary Elephant, and Santa Claus and His Old Lady among many others.

These string of releases were all successful and set their image as a famous countercultural icon- meaning: boys that parents won’t approve of.

Some of their most popular albums are Big Bambu, Los Cochinos, Cheech & Chong’s Wedding Album, Up in Smoke, and many more.

In 1978…

…the duo had their first feature-length movie Up in Smoke, which grossed over $44 million despite its very low budget.

It was followed by sequels Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie and Nice Dreams.

The duo also attempted to try something out of their stoner comedy image with Cheech and Chong’s The Corsican Brothers.

But it wasn’t all awards and fame.

As Cheech later admitted, they’re so different from each other that they soon grew sick of being together.

In 1985, Cheech and Chong disbanded.

But that’s not the end for Cheech Marin.

After Cheech and Chong

Cheech set on to become a solo actor and stand up comedian, starring in several films as well as voice acting later in life.

Some of his most notable films are Born in East L.A, Tin Cup, The Shrimp on the Barbie, Skipping Christmas, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

And that’s not all.

Cheech also ventured into the world of television with Married…with Children as a voice actor to the character Buck, a dog.

Moreover, Cheech starred in The Golden Girls spin-off called The Golden Palace, Joe Dominguez on Nash Bridges, and Rob alongside Rob Schneider.

As for his voice acting…

…Cheech Marin was a staple voice actor in several Disney films such as Oliver & Company, The Lion King, Cars, Cars 2, Cars 3, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua among many others.

Cheech also didn’t stop from making music.

As a matter of fact, he released two children’s music albums namely My Name is Cheech the School Bus Driver, and My Name is Cheech, The School Bus DriverCoast to Coast.”

And did you know?

He also did voice acting in the famous children’s series Dora the Explorer.

Chicano Art

These days, the younger generation knows Cheech Marin not only as an iconic stoner comedian but also as an art collector and art enthusiast.

This lifelong passion started in college and intensified when he was touring and used to buy art pieces in different cities they went to.

And finally…

In 2021, Cheech collaborated with the city of Riverside, California to establish The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture & Industry with over 700 pieces of Chicano art donated by Cheech Marin himself.

Epic.

Cheech Marin has the largest collection of Chicano art in the world and The Cheech, as they call the museum, is the first-ever Chicano museum.
