In a short while, we’ll share an instance where he showed his generosity to the poor…but before that, let’s take a look at how he started his vocation, his road to the papacy, his career earnings, as well as the controversies involving him.

[Pope Francis] Journey To Becoming A Pope

Jose Mario Bergoglio, known today as Pope Francis, attended work as a bar bouncer and as a janitor sweeping the floors.

Jose Mario Bergoglio has been a lifelong supporter of the soccer team, San Lorenzo de Almagro football. He was also a fan of Tango, Neorealism, and the films of Tita Merello.

After experiencing a severe illness- life-threatening pneumonia and having three cysts, he started to discover his calling and found his vocation to the priesthood. He was inspired by the priest whom he confessed to every time he would pass by the church.

More to his vocation…

Jorge Mario Bergoglio attended the Archdiocesan Seminary, a religious institute, and the Immaculada Concepcion Seminary. Here, he had a crush on a girl which made him doubt the vocation he chose.

He also studied humanities in Santiago when he was still a Jesuit novice. To conclude his novitiate in the Society of Jesuit, he made a religious profession of the initial perpetual vows of poverty and obedience of the order.

As time passed by, he studied more…

Bergoglio finished his theological studies in 1967 and was ordained by Archbishop Ramon Jose Castellano to the priesthood at the Facultades de Filosofia y Teologia de San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel.

Later on, Bergoglio completed the final stage of his spiritual training as a Jesuit at Alcala de Henares in Spain. Here, he became the master of novices for a province and a theology professor.

Now that he finished his Jesuit training….

He became the provincial superior of the Society of Jesus in Argentina from 1973 to 1979, and when the outbreak of the Yom Kippur war happened, he stayed there.

Eventually, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and learned English in Ireland before taking up his appointment.

Then, when he took his new post in San Miguel, he stayed at the Jesuit Centre at the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy. He served there until 1986.

Here are the other causes he supported and contradicted…

Back then, Bergoglio opposed social justice based on sociological analysis promoted by Centro de Investigaciones y Accion Social (CIAS), which became a worldwide trend.

In 2005, Bergoglio was elected as the President of the Argentine Episcopal Conference and got re-elected in 2008. He stayed as a member of the commission’s permanent governing body and became the president of its committee for the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina.

More about his duties and experiences as a member of the Catholic Church….

Bergoglio insisted to La Civilta Cattolica that the church need not constantly comment on issues of abortion and homosexuality. He cited that priests are prone to condemnation, so the church should be more welcoming.

Pope Francis holds on to the powerful message of Jesus Christ’s mercy. His motto, “Miserando atque eligendo,” means that everything is about Jesus’ mercy towards sinners.

At present, he sits as the 266th pope of the Catholic Church. Although he was not born in Europe, he is ethnically European.

Here are the awards and recognition Pope Francis received:

  • Bambi – Millennium Award (2016)
  • Person of the Year back in (2016) by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
  • Independent Publisher Book Award for Freedom Fighter of the Year (2017: Bound to Freedom: Slavery to Liberation 2020)

Pope Francis Scandals & Controversies

Since 2016, Pope Francis has been receiving criticisms from theological conservatives for his theoretical principles to pastoral discernment.

When he was still a cardinal, Bergoglio commissioned a study that concluded Father Julio Grassi, a priest convicted of child sexual abuse, was innocent and that he should never have gone to trial.

The Argentine Supreme Court upheld the conviction, and Bergoglio admitted that the church took action late and did not handle sexual abuse cases well. Sadly, abuse survivors were disappointed in his response.

Another issue came up…

Back in 2015, Pope Francis supported Chilean bishop Juan Barros, accused of covering up sex crimes committed against minors. He was criticized for that.

Eventually, he realized his mistake and acknowledged his grave errors in judgment about  Barros. The pope apologized to the victims and launched a Vatican investigation. It resulted in the resignation of Barros along with other Chilean bishops.

Conclusion: Pope Francis Net Worth and Biography

So there you have Pope Francis Net Worth, Biography, and Lifestyle! I believe some would admire him and some will raise an eyebrow, especially the conservatives.

My biggest takeaway from this is welcoming and accepting others, no matter how unconventional it may look to others. We all need to be like Pope Francis, who accepted and embraced the members of the LGBT community. They, too, are human beings who deserved to be loved, cared for, and experience the benefits enjoyed by married heterosexual couples.

Like Pope Francis, who committed misjudgments by supporting abusive bishops from Chile and eventually acknowledged his mistake, we, too, can do the same.

As the head of the Catholic Church, he sets up a good example of being a Christian, owning up to your misdeeds, and taking actions to redeem yourself.
