Early life: Joseph Fidler Walsh was born as Joseph Fidler on November 20, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas. Early on, he was exposed to music because his mother – Dora Jay Newton – was a classically trained pianist. Meanwhile, his father – Lt. Robert Newton Fidler – was a flight instructor in the United States Air Force.

When he was barely two years old, Robert Newton Fidler died in a plane crash in Okinawa. His mother remarried, and he was adopted by his stepfather but retained Fidler as his middle.

His family lived in Columbus, Ohio, then moved to New York City when he was twelve. Soon after, he moved to Montclair, New Jersey, where he attended Montclair High School.

Top 3 Quotes From Joe Walsh

  • “Don’t write emails when you’re pissed off. You can write them, but don’t send them. Because the next day you’re gonna go, ‘Oh man, I did it again, what an asshole I am.’ And you can’t let your emotions own you because if you let your anger own you, you’ll just become anger. You radiate it. It’s a really bad habit, just to get so emotionally crazy.”
  • “It’s very difficult to make the transition back to civilian life after you’ve done what we ask of the vets to do. When you’re alone, it seems like a higher mountain than you can climb. But when people come together and lift each other up, it makes it much, much easier.”
