Ferry Corsten was born on December 4, 1973, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His childhood consisted of listening to “The Soulshow,” a Dutch radio show that played various electronic music, such as disco and soul music, thus exposing him to the genre.

He was only fifteen when he started DJing and making music, displaying his abilities often at school parties. To be able to buy his first keyboard, he worked various odd jobs around the neighborhood, like selling mixtapes and washing cars.

Inspired by Dutch DJs Ferry Maat and Ben Liebrand, he released a record just a year after he began DJing and had continued to release his creations throughout the 90s, which were underground gabber music, but he later expanded into clubhouse and trance music. He was doing all that while also studying electrical engineering.

He earned his first prestigious award at the young age of twenty-one when he won the De Grote Prijs van Nederland (Grand Prize of the Netherlands), which honored his contribution to his native country’s electronic dance music scene.

He continued his early success, with his single “Don’t Be Afraid,” under the pseudonym Moonman, entering the United Kingdom Singles Chart at number forty-six in 1996. This marked his first major European achievement. 

The following year, his collaboration with Peter Nijborn, “Interspace,” was released, as were the singles “Dreams Last For Long” and “I’m Losing Control,” which were his first singles under the aliasPulp Victim. In the same year, he founded the dance label named Tsunami with his partner Robert Smit.

Ferry Corsten produced the 1998 single “Air” under the pseudonym Albion, which was released by Platipus Records. The song turned out to be a big hit and would later be re-released due to its popularity. His follow-up, “Out of the Blue,” which was released under the name System F, became a global trance music hit and entered the UK Singles Chart.

The Dutch DJ achieved more worldwide hits with “Gouryella” and “Walhalla,” both of which made it on various global charts and were certified Gold.

His commercial success soon made him a sought-after remixer by both high-profile and underground artists alike. His most notable works around this period include the remixes of “Liberation,” “Where Are You Now?”, and “The Orange Theme from Gatecrasher’s album “Gatecrasher Wet”; “Madagascar” by Art of Trance; “Universal Nation” by Push, “New year’s Day” by U2, and William Orbit’s “Adagio For Strings,” which won the 2000 Dancestar Awards for Best Remix of the Year.

In 1999, he was named by Muzik Magazine as “Producer of the Year” and was awarded the Zilveren Harp music award, which recognized his significant contributions to Dutch dance music. He also debuted at number seventy-seven at the Top 100 DJs Poll by DJ Magazine.

Ferry Corsten started 2000 with the release of the mix compilation album which he produced alongside Robert Smit, called “Tsunami One,” and the third Gouryella single, “Tenshi.”

2003 saw the release of “Right of Way,” his first album under his own name; it was launched in Heineken Musical Hall during his eight-hour set. The album yielded the singles “Punk,” “It’s Time,” and “Rock Your Body, Rock,” which was nominated for the 2004 Best Video award at the TMF Dutch MTV Awards and was also named by BG Magazine as the biggest hit in the Netherlands that year.

His other noteworthy works and collaborations in the early 2000s include “Soul on Soul” with Soft Cell’s Marc Almond, “Exhale” with Armin van Buuren, remixing Oceanlab’s “Clear Blue Water,” Kosheen’s “Catch,” E’voke’s “Arms of Loren,” Duran Duran’s “Sunshine,” as well as composing and arranging famous Japanese artist Ayumi Hamasaki’s “Connected,” which sold four million copies. He also produced the official theme song for Dance Valley, an annual dance music festival, and the song “Everything Goes” for the TMF Dutch Awards.

Ferry Corsten left Tsunami in 2005 and formed the trance music record label Flashover Recordings. DJ Mag Top 100 also ranked him number five that year.

His second album as a solo artist, “L.E.F.,” was released the following year. It spawned the track “Fire,” which was nominated in the 2006 Trance Awards for the best trance video category.

2007 saw Ferry Corsten launch his own weekly radio show called “Corsten’s Countdown” as well as the first edition of the Full On Ferry concert, which was held at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam. He was responsible for producing Bavaria City Racing’s first official anthem.

Speaking about the new direction his music was taking, Ferry Corsten describes it as  “everything from electro house, trance, and techno” in an interview on the UK clubbing website HarderFaster.net, which led the site to dub him as “King of Crossover.”

On the second edition of the Full On Ferry concert in 2008, Ferry Corsten debuted his third album, “Twice in a Blue Moon.” The album’s first single was played by the likes of Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, Above & Beyond, and other DJs. In that same year, he was named Ambassador of Freedom by the Dutch Liberation Day Committee, making him the first DJ with that honor.

He ended the decade with the “Twice in a Blue Moon: The Experience” tour where he visited countries such as the United States, Brazil, Australia, Lebanon, Malaysia, and Romania, and also held the third edition of the Full On Ferry concert, the Full On Ferry: The Masquerade.

In 2010, Ferry Corsten launched the mobile digital application Cue Play App in celebration of the 150th episode of “Corsten’s Countdown.” He also released the compilation album “Once Upon A Night,” which immediately topped U.S. iTunes. The album was supported by the “Once Upon A Night: The Experience” tour.

Ferry released his full-length album titled “WKND” two years later, which contained tracks featuring other artists such as “Brute” with Armin van Buuren, “Not Coming Down”  with Betsie Larkin, “Live Forever” with Aruna, and “Ain’t No Stoppin” with Ben Hague. He was featured in WKNDR, a series of videos where he spoke directly to a wide range of audiences worldwide. It also gave the viewers a glimpse of his life, onstage, backstage, and in the music production studio. 

Next, he premiered “Ferry’s Fix,” which is different from “Corsten’s Countdown” in that it is a monthly mixshow rather than a weekly interactive show.

In 2013, Ferry Corsten and German music producer Markus Schulz announced their collaboration. As a duo called New World Punx, they would be producing music and touring together. Their first single, “Romper,” made its debut at A State of Trance 600 event at Madison Square Garden. Corsten released the album “Full On Ibiza 2014” the following year. 

The first installment in his Hello World EP series was released in 2015; it included the tracks “Hyper Love,” “Back to Paradise,” “Beat as One,” “Tonka,” and “Make it Ours.” He also released the single “Anahera,” which marked the comeback of his solo trance project “Gouryella.” The song was named Tune of the Year in 2015 on the Dutch trance radio show “A State of Trance.”

As Gouryella, he played at various events that year, including the electronic dance music festivals Electric Daisy Carnival: New York and Beyond Wonderland, and also at the Southeast Asian Games. He was subsequently nominated for    International Dance Music Awards in the Best Trance DJ category, with “Anahera” up for the Best Trance Track.

Other releases from this period include “Neba,” a Gouryella track, and the albums “From the Heavens” and “Blueprint.”

Another notable collaboration of Ferry Corsten was with English trance music producer Paul Oakenfold for “A Slice of Heaven,” the first track in his collaborative project called “Unity.” With “Unity,” he intends to work with fellow trance music artists, with the aim to “bridge the gap between tempos, rhythms and artistic points of view.” The song was followed by more “Unity” tracks, “Safe with Me,” “Rosetta,” “Synchronicity,” and “We’re Not Going Home.”

In 2020, “Corsten’s Countdown” had its finale with episode 700. Meanwhile, it was announced that he would be joining “A State of Trance” as a monthly resident of hour number two. He also launched a new radio show called “Resonation”.

As of 2021, Ferry Corsten teaches aspiring music producers through his music production masterclass.
