Who Is Fatboy Slim?
The future Fatboy Slim, Quentin Leo Cook, was born in Bromley, Kent, England, and raised in Reigate, Surrey. Even at a young age, he was already a music lover; in fact, he took violin lessons at the Reigate Grammar School.
As a teenager, his brother gave him a copy of the debut album of the punk band The Damned, which got him into punk music. He then started playing in punk bands, notably as the drummer of the rock band Disque Attack. He eventually became the band’s lead vocalist after the original lead vocalist’s departure. During this time, he met singer-songwriter Paul Heaton, and together with him, he founded his first band, the Stomping Pondfrogs.
Fatboy Slim’s Career
Even though he had experience DJ-ing before, it was during this period that he became serious in developing the skill and becoming active in the flourishing Brighton club scene. As DJ Quentox, he helped lay the foundation for Brighton’s hip-hop scene.
In 1985, he moved to Hull to join Paul Heaton’s guitar band called The Housemartins as the bassist. Fortunately, it didn’t take them long to find success; their single “Happy Hour” was a hit, as well as their albums “London 0 Hull 4” and “The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death,” which both peaked at the UK Albums Chart Top 10. In December the following year, their a cappella cover of the Isley-Jasper-Isley’s “Caravan of Love” became a UK number-one single.
After the band split in 1988, Norman Cook went on to work with Simon Thornton, who would later become his longtime studio engineer. Soon afterward, he scored his first hit as a solo artist with 1989’s “Blame it on the Bassline” featuring MC Wildski. He founded another band, called Beats International, with rappers MC Wildski and DJ Baptiste, keyboardist Andy Boucher, and studio musicians including Lester Noel and Lindy Layton, and “Blame it on the Bassline” providing the basis for the musical style of the electronic band.
Their debut album spawned their signature hit and UK number-one single “Dub Be Good to Me,” which got him into a legal dispute and bankrupted him. After two unsuccessful follow-up albums, Cook moved on and formed Freak Power with singer Jesse Graham and horn player Ashley Slater. The band’s first album “Drive-Thru Booty” featured the song “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out,” which Lev’s would later use in an advertising campaign, resulting in renewed interest in the song.
In 1995, Cook enlisted his producer friends Tim Jeffery and JC Reid for help to create an electronic music album for Pizzaman, an electronic music duo consisting of Cook and John Reid. The resulting album was “Pizzamania,” which yielded the songs “Happiness,” “Trippin’ on Sunshine,” and “Sex on the Streets,” all of which became UK Top 40 hits. The song “Happiness” is also notable for being used in a Del Monte Foods UK fruit juice ad.
Another music duo Cook formed was the Mighty Dub Katz with his former flatmate Gareth Hansome, also known as GMoney. That same year, the Mighty Dub Katz released the song “Magic Carpet Ride,” which is their biggest hit to date.
The following year, Norman Cook adopted the pseudonym Fatboy Slim and released his debut studio album “Better Living Through Chemistry.” The debut album spawned the single “Going Out of My Head,” which charted in the US, making the album his first work to chart outside of the UK.
His next album, “You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby,” contained the singles “The Rockafeller Skank” and his first UK number-one single as a solo artist, “Praise You.” Cook performed the latter live at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1999, and earned three awards.
His successful follow-ups include the studio album “Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars” and the songs “Sunset (Bird of Prey)” and “Weapon of Choice.”
Fatboy Slim released “Why Try Harder” in 2006, his greatest hits album. Aside from past singles, it also included two new tracks, “That Old Pair of Jeans” and “Champion Sound.”
In 2008, Fatboy Slim formed and debuted The Brighton Port Authority, with their debut album “I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat” being released the following year.
Cook returned as Fatboy Slim in 2013 with the UK Dance Chart-topper “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” and “Where U Iz” in 2017.
Among the songs he produced are Blur’s “Crazy Beat” and “Gene by Gene,” Rizzle Kicks’ “Mama Do the Hump,” and various successful remixes for the likes of Beastie Boys, Cornershop, Wildchild, and A Tribe Called Quest.
