Evander Holyfield Biography: The Smallest Man in Every Fight He Won

Riddick Bowe was bigger. Lennox Lewis was bigger. Mike Tyson was thicker through the chest and hit harder. Every serious heavyweight Evander Holyfield fought after 1988 outweighed him, and he beat most of them anyway.

The whole career is one long argument about what size is actually worth.

A 175lb Boy in Bowen Homes

Holyfield was born on 19 October 1962 in Atmore, Alabama, the youngest of nine children. His mother, Annie, moved the family to the Bowen Homes housing projects in Atlanta.

In 1970 he started taking lessons at the Warren Memorial Boys Club from a coach called Carter Morgan, who told an eight-year-old he could be the next Muhammad Ali. Morgan died of cancer while Holyfield was still a teenager.

Holyfield has never varied on who kept him in the sport. At his Hall of Fame induction he put it in six words: “My mom wouldn’t let me quit.”

The club where he learned is now called the Warren Holyfield Boys and Girls Club of East Atlanta.

As an amateur he went roughly 160-14, fighting at light-heavyweight. That is 175lb. Hold on to the number.

Los Angeles, 1984: Disqualified

At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Holyfield reached the light-heavyweight semi-final and knocked down New Zealand’s Kevin Barry. The referee ruled the punch had landed after a break and disqualified him.

The objection was immediate and loud. It changed nothing. He took bronze.

American audiences had watched it live and decided he had been robbed, which is a useful thing for a young professional to have. He turned over later that year, still a light-heavyweight in a country that only cared about heavyweights.

Eating His Way Up a Division and a Half

He moved to cruiserweight, then the newest and least glamorous weight class in boxing, and cleared it out. By 1988 he was the first undisputed cruiserweight champion in the sport’s history, holding all three recognised belts at 190lb.

There was nowhere left to go except up.

Up meant adding roughly 30lb of muscle without surrendering the hand speed and the stamina that were his real advantages. He did it with conditioning coaches using methods unusual in boxing at the time and widely copied afterwards.

He arrived at heavyweight around 208lb. That was light for the division in 1990. Today it would barely make cruiserweight.

October 1990: Buster Douglas

His title shot came against Buster Douglas, who had shocked Mike Tyson in Tokyo earlier that year and then turned up to defend the undisputed championship visibly out of condition.

Holyfield knocked him out in the third round. Six years after the Los Angeles Olympics, a 175lb amateur was undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

He defended against George Foreman, Bert Cooper and Larry Holmes, and the criticism attached itself instantly: too small, beating old men. The next opponent was chosen to answer it.

Bowe Three Times, and a Heart That Failed a Test

Riddick Bowe stood 6ft 5in and outweighed him by more than 30lb. Their November 1992 fight sits on most lists of the best heavyweight contests ever staged, and Holyfield lost it on points after a tenth round in which neither man took a backward step.

He won the rematch a year later, the night a paraglider came down in the ring. He lost the third in 1995.

Between the second and third fights, doctors diagnosed a heart condition and he retired in 1994. He was cleared the following year and came straight back. It remains one of the odder chapters in modern boxing, and it slowed him down not at all.

November 1996, June 1997: Tyson

By late 1996 Mike Tyson had rebuilt his aura and Holyfield was seen as a 34-year-old with a heart scare on file. The betting reflected it. He was a heavy underdog.

On 9 November 1996 he bullied Tyson, took everything Tyson had, and stopped him in the eleventh.

The rematch on 28 June 1997 produced the most notorious three rounds in the sport’s modern history. Tyson bit both of Holyfield’s ears, removing part of the right one, and was disqualified in the third. Holyfield was paid an estimated $35 million for the night.

The two men reconciled publicly years later and have appeared together since.

Holyfield went on to beat Michael Moorer and John Ruiz among others, and to hold a version of the heavyweight title on four separate occasions, a record still unmatched.

The Long Tail

The last decade of the career is the hard part to write.

He kept fighting into his forties, past the point where several commissions were comfortable licensing him, losing to Lennox Lewis and taking bouts in Europe when American promoters would not stage them. The final one was a stoppage of Brian Nielsen on 7 May 2011. He announced his retirement in June 2014, aged 51, at 44-10-2 with 29 knockouts.

The money followed the career out. His Atlanta-area estate ran to 54,000 square feet on 234 acres, the largest single-family home in Georgia, and cost over $1 million a year to maintain. It was foreclosed in 2008. He later sold championship belts and memorabilia to settle debts, and public filings in the early 2010s recorded unpaid child support and back taxes. It was not one catastrophe. It was a decade of fixed obligations against income that had already stopped.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on 11 June 2017, on the first ballot. He has eleven children, among them the professional boxer Evan Holyfield and the NFL running back Elijah Holyfield. In September 2021, at 58, he took a one-off exhibition against Vitor Belfort and was stopped inside a round.

Why I Rate Him Above the Consensus

Holyfield tends to get filed as boxing’s great warrior, which sounds like praise and functions as a demotion. Warriors get credit for heart. Great fighters get credit for solving people.

Look at what he actually solved. Douglas by walking through him. Bowe by outworking a man 30lb heavier for 36 rounds across three fights. Tyson by standing in the pocket and leaning on him, which was the one thing conventional wisdom said nobody should ever do.

None of that is courage. It is a fighter reading opponents correctly and then having the physical capital to act on it, at a body weight that should have made it impossible.

The financial collapse gets used to frame the whole life as cautionary. I would separate the two. The spending was ordinary bad judgement of a kind common in every sport. The fighting was extraordinary, and it is the part that will still be argued about in fifty years.
