Errol Spence Jr. Biography: Reading a Career Backwards

Careers get told forwards, which flatters them. Errol Spence Jr.’s reads better the other way round, because the ending explains everything that came before it.

Sydney, 26 July 2026

He was 36, three years out of the ring, boxing at middleweight against Tim Tszyu in a sold-out arena in Sydney. He lost almost every round. The cards: 118-110, 117-111, 117-111.

Asked in the ring whether that was the end, he said yes immediately. His trainer confirmed afterwards that the decision had been made before the first bell. Lose, and he was done.

Spence gave three reasons: his health, his family, and money he no longer needed. Then the line that told you the most. “I don’t remember 12 rounds feeling like that.”

Final record: 28-2, 22 knockouts, over 30 fights and just under 14 years.

The Three Years Nobody Saw

The layoff was medical, not tactical.

In 2024 Spence had cataract surgery on his right eye. He explained it himself on Instagram, in language nobody in his camp had used publicly before: the eye had been obscured for some time, which was why he had been catching so many jabs and hooks in his previous fight.

It was the second operation of its kind. In 2021, a detached retina suffered in sparring forced the cancellation of a scheduled fight with Manny Pacquiao weeks out.

A boxer carrying surgery on two eyes has a shorter runway than his record suggests. Nothing about Sydney contradicted that.

29 July 2023: Crawford

The night that broke the arc came at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, against Terence Crawford. Both men unbeaten. All four welterweight belts on the table. The fight the division had wanted for five years.

Crawford dismantled him. Spence was dropped three times and stopped in the ninth, his first defeat at 28-0.

It remains the most complete performance either man ever produced, and it is why the years after it read the way they do.

Six Years as the Man Nobody Wanted

Before Crawford, Spence had the opposite problem. He could not get anyone to sign.

He took the IBF welterweight title from Kell Brook in Sheffield on 27 May 2017, stopping him in the eleventh in front of 27,000 of Brook’s own supporters. Winning like that, in a stadium built against you, settles a reputation permanently.

The WBC title followed from Shawn Porter in September 2020, on a split decision most people rate the hardest night of his career. The WBA came from Yordenis Ugás in April 2022, tenth-round stoppage.

10 October 2019: Riverfront Boulevard

At around 2:53am, Spence was driving a Ferrari 488 Spider at high speed through Dallas when it flipped several times and threw him clear. He was not wearing a seatbelt. He came away with facial lacerations and no broken bones.

Police reported that he had been drinking. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanour.

He was back in the ring 14 months later. The crash became the dividing line in how people discussed him. Everything before it was a fighter on schedule. Everything after was a fighter absorbing interruptions.

DeSoto, Texas

Spence was born on 3 March 1990 on Long Island, New York, to a Jamaican father and an African-American mother. The family moved to DeSoto, a suburb south of Dallas, when he was around seven.

He did not start boxing until he was fifteen, which is late, and by his own account he took it up to stay out of trouble.

What followed was one of the strongest American amateur runs of its generation. Roughly 135 wins against 12 losses. Three straight US National Championships, 2009 through 2011. A place on the 2012 Olympic team, where he was the only American man to reach a quarter-final in London before losing to Russia’s Andrey Zamkovoy.

He turned professional that November with a third-round knockout, and the record that ended in Sydney began.

What I Think He Was

The obituaries wrote him as a fighter who stayed too long. That is the easy version, and it is half right.

The harder version is that Spence’s peak was compressed into a shorter window than almost anyone noticed at the time. Brook in 2017, Porter in 2020, Ugás in 2022. Three genuinely elite performances across five years, in a division where he was avoided for most of it, interrupted by a car crash and a retinal detachment that between them cost him the Pacquiao fight and a chunk of his prime.

He did not get the volume of great nights his talent deserved, and I do not think that was mostly his fault.

The 2026 return was a mistake in hindsight. It was also, on his own account, the price of finding out. He walked out of the sport at 36 with his faculties, his family and his money, which is not the ordinary ending for a fighter who was once the most feared man in his division.
