Dolly Parton: 1946 to (2026), the Girl From Locust Ridge

Dolly Parton died on 25 August 2026 in Nashville, aged 80. She had been born in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, on 19 January 1946, the fourth of twelve children, in a house with no electricity and no running water.

Eighty years is a long time to travel that distance, and she did it without ever really leaving.

The Mountain

Sevier County in the 1940s was poor in a way that is difficult to convey now. Her father farmed and could not read. Her mother raised twelve children on almost nothing and sang constantly, which is where the songs came from.

Parton never sanded any of this down. She talked about the poverty specifically and often, and she made a career-long point of not being embarrassed by it. The rhinestones were, by her own repeated telling, a poor girl’s idea of what glamour looked like, and she declined to grow out of it.

Nashville, and the Long Apprenticeship

She left for Nashville the day after finishing high school in 1964.

The breakthrough came through The Porter Wagoner Show, where she spent seven years as the female lead of an established star’s television programme. It made her famous and it constrained her, and when she left in 1974 she wrote “I Will Always Love You” about the professional parting. The song was a goodbye letter to a business partner, which is not what most people who have cried to it assume.

That same period produced “Jolene”. By her own account the two were written in the same sitting, which if true is one of the more remarkable days anyone has had at a desk.

Carl

She married Carl Dean in 1966 and stayed married to him until his death on 3 March 2025, at 82. Sixty years.

He almost never appeared in public. There are only a handful of photographs of him. He ran an asphalt paving business in Nashville, disliked the industry entirely, and by her account had seen her perform only a small number of times.

It is the least documented part of her life and, in a career built on visibility, probably the most deliberate.

What She Built

Dollywood opened under her name in Pigeon Forge in 1986, in the county she came from, and became one of the largest employers in the area. She was explicit about the reasoning: the mountains needed jobs.

The Imagination Library started in 1995 and posts free books to children, more than a million a month now, across several countries. She founded it because her father could not read and she had watched what that cost him. He lived long enough to see it working, and she said he was prouder of it than of anything she had recorded.

In 2020 she gave a million dollars to Vanderbilt University for coronavirus research, funding that went to work contributing to Moderna’s vaccine. She was characteristically unbothered about the credit.

The Estate of a Songwriter

Her fortune, estimated between $450 million and $650 million, rests on a decision she made in 1974 when Elvis Presley wanted “I Will Always Love You” and Colonel Tom Parker demanded half the publishing. She refused. Whitney Houston recorded it in 1992 and it became one of the best-selling singles ever, with the writer’s share going where it had always belonged.

She wrote more than 3,000 songs and kept hold of them. That is the whole business lesson, and she arrived at it before she was thirty.

She is survived by her siblings. Carl Dean predeceased her by seventeen months.
