Come On Over came out in 1997 and became the best-selling album ever made by a female artist. Then Shania Twain more or less disappeared for fifteen years, and the reason was a tick.

The Album

There is no modern equivalent to what that record did. It crossed from country into pop internationally at a moment when those audiences barely overlapped, and it sold at a scale that album charts no longer produce.

Crucially, she wrote it. Twain co-wrote her major hits with producer Robert John Lange, her husband from 1993 to 2010, which means she holds writer’s credits across the biggest-selling country catalogue of her generation.

Lyme Disease

In the early 2000s she was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme disease.

She did not release a studio album for around fifteen years. She eventually underwent open-throat surgery and rebuilt a voice that is audibly different from the one on Come On Over, and returned to recording and to performing.

Very few careers survive a decade and a half of enforced silence. Hers did, partly because the catalogue kept working while she could not.

The Vegas Years

Las Vegas residencies became a significant part of the income once touring at full scale was no longer straightforward.

The residency model suits an artist in exactly her position: a fixed venue built to the show’s requirements, a controlled schedule, no logistics of moving a production between cities, and audiences who travel to it. For a performer managing a physical limitation it is close to ideal, and it is well paid.

Estimates put her between $350 million and $410 million. The spread is wide because catalogue valuation is an art rather than a science, and because a body of work that sold Come On Over numbers is difficult to price against modern comparables that simply do not exist.
